Where Do Kids Hide Drugs, Alcohol?

The Call to Action Coalition's Oct. 4 breakfast in Farmington Hills will feature a display that shows what to look for in your teen's bedroom.

A display that shows the scores of places parents might find drugs or alcohol in a teen's bedroom will be among the highlights of Friday morning's Call to Action Coalition annual breakfast, held at Vladimir's Banquet Hall in Farmington Hills.

Coalition member Mitch Seelye said the nonprofit is celebrating its 25th year of hosting the event, during which elected officials and residents pledge to help break the silence around domestic violence, drugs and alcohol.

"There's still a huge stigma with mental health issues or substance abuse," he said. "Nobody wants to talk about it."

The Coalition is coming off a year of change; the organization is now under the umbrella of the City of Farmington Hills Commission on Children, Youth and Families. Seelye said the organizations both benefit; the Commission has more members who can help with projects, and the Coalition's 501(c)3 status opens up grant-seeking opportunities.

"Alcohol and domestic abuse are issues that affect the whole family," Seelye said, "and so it's a natural fit."

Breakfast speakers will also include a graduate of the 47th District Court's Sobriety Court program, Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus and Farmington Public Safety Director Bob Schulz.
