School Starts and More This Week in Farmington and Farmington Hills

The Jewish new year starts Wednesday at sundown.

Tuesday is a big day for Farmington area school children (and their parents), but there are other things you should know about the week ahead.

Here they are, in order of appearance:

1. First day of school.

Keep an eye out for buses and school children crossing on local streets. And remember, it's illegal to pass a school bus when the stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing.

2. Farmington Musicale season opens.

The first of their free concerts will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at the Farmington Community Library Main Library. "Many Faces of Music" offers "a musical journey through various colorful musical styles, instruments and performers."

3. Rosh Hashanah begins.

The holiday starts at sundown on Wednesday, as Jews celebrate the beginning of a new year.

4. Learn about Medicare Part D Prescription Drug program.

Held Thursday, 10 a.m., at the Farmington Community Library Main Library, this presentation includes savings strategies, patient assistance programs, and other helpful tips. Registration is required; call 248-553-0300 or visit farmlib.org

5. High school football teams open their seasons at home.

Farmington Public Schools high school teams all play at home Friday. Farmington hosts Westland John Glenn, Harrison hosts Detroit Renaissance and North Farmington hosts Bay City John Glenn.
