Monarchs in Serious Decline; Learn How to Attract Them in Oakland County

Monarch Watch experts will be on hand Saturday at a program on restoring habitat the beautiful butterflies – important pollinators – need to survive. Kids will also get a chance to see the amazing metamorphosis of these winged beauties.

Do you want to attract more Monarch butterflies, the migratory pollinators?

You should, according to Monarch Watch, an educational research program program that produces real-time data on the conservation status of Monarch butterflies. Monarch populations are declining due to loss of habitat, such as milkweed.

Experts from the organization will be on hand at an Oakland County Parks seminar at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wint Nature Center, 9501 Sashabaw Rd, Clarkston.

In addition to presenting some of the secrets to attracting and raising Monarchs, the experts will also offer a briefing on the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly, which grows from a tiny egg into a fearsome caterpillar, increasing its weight almost 3,000 times in 15 days and then transforming into a gorgeous chrysalis.

Participants will be able to witness a butterfly metamorphosis, as well as hear from Monarch Watch experts about what you can do to boost populations of the important pollinator.
