Susan Zurvalec says the district could lose another $300,000 unless things change; State Rep. Vicki Barnett believes they will.
Farmington Public Schools Superintendent Sue Zurvalec heard Thursday morning that a deal struck Wednesday night to spend the state's surplus revenue could cost the district an additional $300,000. On Thursday afternoon, State Rep. Vicki Barnett said a deal was in the works that would eliminate the cuts for Farmington and other more highly funded districts. And MLive.com reported Thursday night that steps had been taken Thursday to ensure "that all school districts would get at least $5 more student in the next fiscal year after certain adjustments are made in the funding formula." Zurvalec's concern reflects a tough reality for the district, which faces a budget deficit of about $7 million for the 2013-2014 school year. "Sadly, in …

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the Detroit Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.
Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home--long wait times for their disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically with location: about a year and five months in Baltimore compared to four months in Fargo, ND. The national average now stands at about a year and one month, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. In Detroit, the current average wait time is 377 days, compared with 119 days in 2010. The backlog has also partly been blamed on…
The story of four young Aboriginal girls who form an all-girl singing group features Motown music.
An independent Australian film that drew a rave response at the Cannes Film Festival opens May 24 at the Farmington Civic Theater. The Sapphires (PG-13) is based on the true story of four young, talented Australian Aboriginal girls who form an all-girl singing group and entertain U.S. troops in 1968. Chris O'Dowd, star of the popular movie Bridesmaids, plays an almost-washed-up producer who sees the potential in the group. "When I heard this movie received a ten-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, I had to give it a try," theater manager Scott Freeman said. "It's a fantastic film with a great story and lots of Motown music." Showtimes and more information are available at theFCT.com

Weather-permitting, one of the city's favorite recreation spots will open for the season for the holiday weekend.
You may have seen water running at the Heritage Park splash pad in Farmington Hills this week, but the popular outdoor recreation spot isn't open for business just yet. City special services director Ellen Schnackel said parks staffers have been "performing routine maintenance", getting ready to open Memorial Day weekend. The splash pad will remain open through Labor Day weekend, weather-permitting, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. City offices in Farmington Hills and Farmington will be closed on Monday, March 27 for the Memorial Day holiday. There will be no trash, recycling or yard waste pick-up on Monday in both cities, delaying the schedule by one day all week. Friday's pick-up will happen on Saturday. U.S. Post Office branches in Farmington…
A benefit for Max Merget's MAXyourBRAIN foundation raises $1,123 that will be directed toward brain cancer research.
Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) students at Harrison High School reached out in a big way when they heard the inspiring story of Max Merget, son of marketing teacher Nina Merget, they were inspired to help. Since the age of 3, Max has been battling brain cancer. After three successful surgeries kept him cancer-free for 10 years, Max, a Plymouth Salem senior, was recently diagnosed with his fourth brain tumor. Rather than let his illness stop him, Max started a foundation at University of Michigan Hospital called MAXyourBRAIN.org. All money raised by his foundation goes directly to brain cancer research. Harrison students raised $1,123 during the school year and presented the check to Max at his foundation's recent charity…
A Patch blogger made the hourslong trip from Chicago to Novi to attend the comic book convention.
The drive might have taken a few hours, but two friends said they couldn't have enjoyed their recent trip to Michigan any better. John Wroblewski and Cuzz Gekas traveled to Novi from Chicago last weekend for Motor City Comic Con, Michigan’s original comic convention held at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. "(We) spent the weekend enjoying celebrities, comics and other pop culture fun," Wroblewski wrote on his blog. "I have read criticism concerning various aspects of the convention. Perhaps we were just very lucky, but the problems we encountered were minimal and the fun we had was maximum." Wroblewski, who runs JohngysBeat.com, met sports and TV celebrities, in addition to other pop culture icons during the weekend trip. To watch …
Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.
Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a good marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess…
