Farmington Schools Board Member Receives Art Van Award of Hope

Trustee Sheilah Clay is president and CEO of Neighborhood Service Organization in Detroit.

Sheilah Clay, Farmington Public Schools' Board of Education trustee, was one of five individuals statewide to receive the Art Van Award of Hope for an unwavering commitment to family and community. Clay is president and CEO of Neighborhood Service Organization in Detroit, which provides services that include addiction treatment, crisis intervention/suicide prevention, early childhood education, youth leadership development and more to people in Wayne and Oakland counties. According to the non-profit's website, Clay has been with the organization since 2000.  She and four other honorees were saluted during the 2013 “Award of Hope” event on May 16 at the Art Van Furniture store in Novi. Farmington Schools Superintendent Raises School Funding Deal Alarm

Susan Zurvalec says the district could lose another $300,000 unless things change; State Rep. Vicki Barnett believes they will.

Farmington Public Schools Superintendent Sue Zurvalec heard Thursday morning that a deal struck Wednesday night to spend the state's surplus revenue could cost the district an additional $300,000.  On Thursday afternoon, State Rep. Vicki Barnett said a deal was in the works that would eliminate the cuts for Farmington and other more highly funded districts. And MLive.com reported Thursday night that steps had been taken Thursday to ensure "that all school districts would get at least $5 more student in the next fiscal year after certain adjustments are made in the funding formula." Zurvalec's concern reflects a tough reality for the district, which faces a budget deficit of about $7 million for the 2013-2014 school year.  "Sadly, in …

There are many things the district could have done, and more drastic things they can still do. Regardless, the State is hellbent on underfunding education - not just Farmington. They have been messing witht he formula and taking/borrowing from the fund for years. Look at the number of districts in deficit for their current year and how many are projected to be in deficit the following year. The …   more ›

Harrison Teacher's Son Inspires DECA Fundraiser for Brain Cancer Research

A benefit for Max Merget's MAXyourBRAIN foundation raises $1,123 that will be directed toward brain cancer research.

Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) students at Harrison High School reached out in a big way when they heard the inspiring story of Max Merget, son of marketing teacher Nina Merget, they were inspired to help.  Since the age of 3, Max has been battling brain cancer. After three successful surgeries kept him cancer-free for 10 years, Max, a Plymouth Salem senior, was recently diagnosed with his fourth brain tumor. Rather than let his illness stop him, Max started a foundation at University of Michigan Hospital called  MAXyourBRAIN.org. All money raised by his foundation goes directly to brain cancer research.  Harrison students raised $1,123 during the school year and presented the check to Max at his foundation's recent charity…

Mercy High School Names Novi Students Valedictorian, Salutatorian

Kathleen M. Coerdt and Christina Hadley will speak during the school's May 30 graduation ceremony at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

Two Novi students have been selected to serve as Salutatorian and Valedictorian of Mercy High School's Class of 2013. Valedictorian Kathleen M. Coerdt and Salutatorian Christina Hadley will address the 179 graduates at the Farmington Hills private school's 68th commencement ceremony, held May 30 at Compuware Arena. According to a school press release, the Valedictorian and Salutatorian "must exemplify an academically exceptional student who has pursued a well-balanced program of studies while attending Mercy High School." Selection is based on a student self-appraisal, staff and senior class input, and an interview with administrators. Coerdt has received a number of honors, including the Rosalie Hebeler Award for Excellence in AP …

Farmington High Student Wins International DECA Conference Event

Jane Xiao takes first place in Food Marketing at the the 67th annual International Career Development Conference.

Farmington High School senior Jane Xiao decided to take a marketing class in her junior year, because she heard it could be really helpful.  "I stuck with it, and I'm really glad I did," said Xiao, who last month walked across the stage at the 67th annual International Career Development Conference to accept her first place award in the Food Marketing Series Event.  Xiao had to win in district and state competition in order to make the trip to Anaheim, CA, as did her fellow DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapter members Mackenzie Butler, Sydney Tyus, Rohit Bhadange, Sahit Bollineni, Prakash Pagadala and Michelle Scott. The High School division includes 185,000 members in 5,000 schools, with members in all 50 United States, …

With Farmington, Harrison and North Farmington High School proms just days away, preparations for the big dance are in full swing. But before final plans for dresses, hair, shoes, tuxes and limos can be made, finding a date comes first. The growing tradition of prom-posals can include a car full of balloons or a messages written in lights – high school students everywhere are getting more creative when asking their prospective partner to prom. This week, we found one invitation in big bold letters on a fence at Shiawassee Park. It's pictured above, and we hope Charlie said yes.  So, what have fun and creative proposals have you seen? East Middle School Workshops Help Students Make Better Choices

The Farmington Hills school's 9th annual May Day: A Call for Help includes information on addiction, relationship violence, nutrition and health, and money management.

East Middle School students will hear information to help them make better choices during the 9th annual “May Day: A Call for Help”, held during the school day on May 31.  Presented by Farmington Hills school's Student Assistance Team, the event is designed to help adolescents during a critical time, when poorly informed decisions have lifelong consequences. In a promotional letter, organizers wrote, "Our hope is that by educating our students before they make difficult decisions and by giving them tools to seek help for themselves and/or friends, we will aid in breaking the silence about violence, drugs and alcohol."  All 8th graders will choose to attend five of the 22 workshops offered, with topics like these: Farmington Hills police …

Dunckel Needs Volunteers to Help 8th Graders Prepare for Future Jobs

The mock interviews will be held at the Farmington Hills school June 5 and 6.

Dunckel Middle School is looking for parents and other community members to help prepare 8th graders to take their place in the world of work. Adults will work with students in mock interviews held June 5 and 6, 7:30 a.m.-2:10 p.m. Farmington Public Schools provides career education as a segment in the 8th grade Language Arts curriculum. Students prepare for their interviews by completing a career unit with their teachers during the previous week.  Mock interviews are conducted during each student’s scheduled English class, and volunteers will interview approximately 10 to 20 students per period. The volunteer interviewers will ask the students around 10 prepared questions, and students are rated on introduction, appearance, dialogue and …
