Farmington Hills council member Ken Massey urges school officials to move more quickly in adding the life-saving procedure as a graduation requirement.
Farmington Public Schools officials say they're planning to add cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to the 9th grade health curriculum in 2014. Farmington Hills city council member Ken Massey says that's not nearly soon enough. At a joint meeting of the the Hills and Farmington city councils and Farmington school board Tuesday, he asked school officials what could be done to move the program forward. Massey has pushed over the past five years to make the life-saving technique a graduation requirement for Farmington Schools students. He has cited statistics from King County in Washington, where a concerted effort to train all citizens in CPR increased the out-of-hospital survival rate to 20 percent. If the cardiac event was …

Marina Courtaut has spent the school year with the Halton-Balogh family in Farmington Hills.
In Spain, Marina Courtaut is still a high school junior. But she's enjoying her senior year at Farmington High, as an exchange student staying with the Halton-Balogh family in Farmington Hills. Coming in as a senior allows her to experience more, Marina said, from varsity sports and prom to the Senior All-Night Party. Since August, she has also visited Washington, D.C., Chicago, Niagra Falls and University of Michigan athletic events. While this wasn't her first trip to the U.S., living here for months at a time has been an adjustment, Marina said. Her host family was very patient with her in the beginning, she said, because "they have to repeat things, and sometimes, you don't understand each other." The family had an advantage, in that …

Hailey Samples, a 5th grader, won the Wednesday assembly with Matthew Stafford as part of a Blue Cross Blue Shield video competition.
Hailey Samples admits she was a little nervous as she sat in front about 1,000 of her Warner Upper Elementary schoolmates Wednesday afternoon. "I've never been in a crowd that big before, like, in front of them," said the 5th grader, who won the assembly with Detriot Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford through the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) "Make the Play" competition. Hailey, with the help of her mother, Sheilah Samples, produced a video sharing her best tips for staying healthy. As a finalist, she rounded up the support of family and friends in an online voting campaign last month. She learned on May 7 that her video took top honors. BCBS vice president of corporate communications Andy Hetzel said Wednesday that Hailey was actually …

Thomas Lichtenberg talks with 4th graders at Gill Elementary about how he uses optimism to overcome the challenges that come with his condition.
Despite being bullied and knowing he has Asperger's syndrome, Thomas Lichtenberg is an optimist. "I have so much optimism, I have even bcome an optimist about Asperger's," the Power Upper Elementary 5th grader told a group of Gill Elementary 4th graders Friday. Thomas openly talks about his condition, which is an autism spectrum disorder, and he has even helped his classmates understand it. "He's amazed me this year," his teacher Nancie Jahshan said. "The joy he's brought to our classroom has been amazing. He has a voice that needs to be heard." Jahshan felt so strongly about Thomas' message that she made arrangements for him to speak to four classes at Gill. He met the first two on Friday and will speak to a second group on May 17. …

From hand-spun candy to ancient toys, artists spend a day sharing talents at the Farmington Hills middle school.
Students at East Middle School in Farmington Hills got a taste of Taiwanese culture this week, with a visit from a troupe of traveling artists visiting courtesy of the Taiwanese government. East teacher Sui Lin Sih said the Wednesday visit was offered to the school free of charge, as part of a national tour. Artists were stationed with interpreters in classrooms, where demonstrated making dough figurines with a mixture of rice and flour, Dragon's Beard candy, hakka paper umbrellas, sugar painting, ancient toys and more. "In Taiwan, art is a very important part of our culture," Sih said. "This is basically the Taiwanese government trying to promote our culture within different communities." After their Detroit-area visit, the troupe was …

Hailey Samples' video took tops honors in the Blue Cross Blue Shield 'Make the Play' competition.
Warner Upper Elementary School student Hailey Samples learned her video won the Blue Cross Blue Shield "Make the Play" competition even before her mother had a chance to give her the news. Hailey, a 5th grader, opened up a laptop computer in her classroom Monday morning, when contest results were announced on the competition website. "I saw my name in big letters, and I got really excited," Hailey said Thursday. Her classmates "were yelling and clapping, and they were all excited." Sheilah Samples received a phone call about her daughter's win, but by the time they connected, Hailey had already seen the website. "That was really a better way for her to find out," Sheilah Samples said. Hailey and Forest Elementary 4th grader Jalen …

Groups from the Farmington Hills school tested and observed conditions at the Rouge branch that runs through Shiawassee Park in Farmington.
Last week, students from Steppingstone School for Gifted Education were among 3,000 youth from southeast Michigan who conducted chemical tests, examined aquatic life, and surveyed the Rouge River. Steppingstone groups worked at a branch of the Rouge in Shiawassee Park, where they measured water temperature, monitored its pH balance and turbidity, searched for tiny creatures and conducted other tests Wednesday morning. The Rouge Education Project is coordinated by the non-profit Friends of the Rouge. The data students collected is made available to the public on the Friends of the Rouge website (therouge.org) and is provided to communities in the watershed.

After a unit on careers, 8th graders at the Farmington Hills middle school face a real test.
After being prepped with classroom lessons about the world of work, 8th graders at East Middle School spent Wednesday taking one last step to help prepare them for future careers. Lita Hoyer, who works in career development for Farmington Public Schools, said the career units taught by English teachers end with mock interviews, conducted by parents and other community volunteers. "Students come dressed for success," Hoyer said. "They spend about five or six minutes with each interview, and then they rotate. The interviewer will give them feedback about what they can do to improve." Kalyani Ramamurtay, 13, thought she did pretty well as she made the rounds. "It was really fun, a great experience," she said. In the classroom, she "…

The new and faster desktop computers will save hours of time, technology director Michael Johnston said.
Farmington Public Schools officials on Tuesday approved a $1,194,000 bid for replacement of 1,200 desktop computers that will end up saving the district more than money. FPS Director of Information Technology Michael Johnston told board members the bid process began in January, and took longer than usual because none of the first bids met the district's specifications. "I'm pretty particular, I want to make sure every single item is met," he said. That included having a model of the computer to test and "see how it's going to work in our environment." The bid will replace nearly 20 percent of the district's desktop computers, Johnston said. In order to reduce expenditures, the district extended its replacement program from five to seven…
