Share Your Tigers Memories to Win Memorabilia

The Topps Company, Inc. launched its new baseball app, Topps Pennant, on Monday and is hosting an online giveaway.

What is your favorite Tigers memory? Kaline’s two-run single in Game 5 of the ’68 World Series, Gibby’s homer in the eighth to clinch the Series in ’84 or maybe Verlander’s no hitter in 2007 or in 2011?   On Monday, The Topps Company, Inc. launched its new baseball app, Topps Pennant, with a special promotion asking the Detroit faithful to share their favorite Tigers memories using the Topps Pennant app and the #tigermemories hashtag on Twitter.   Participating fans will have the chance to win Tigers collectibles including old Topps cards of Tigers players of the 1980’s along with a signed contract from Tigers legend Alan Trammell. Team Farmington Special Olympics Draws Record Crowd at Drakeshire

Team Farmington's fundraiser celebrates its 20th year with the largest crowd in its history.

The 20th Annual Team Farmington Special Olympics fundraiser, held at Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington Saturday, drew the largest crowd in its history. The fundraiser helps athletes compete in Special Olympics events. Money goes toward uniforms and other costs related to the sports in which they participate. In addition to bowling bowling, teams from all over metro Detroit enjoyed salad, pizza, and pop as they played for a good cause. A century ago the Detroit Tigers moved into a new ballpark at Michigan and Trumbull. From 1912 until 1999, some of the greatest ballplayers in the major leagues played at the stadium. Video: 65-Year-Old Hockey Player Shares Story

Diane Pieknik, a resident of Fox Run retirement community in Novi, shows you're never too old to try something new.

Back in February, Novi Patch told you about Diane Pieknik, a 65-year-old woman who decided to turn her lifelong love for hockey into her newest hobby by joining an adult women's hockey league. Now Pieknik tells her own story in a video by Erickson Living. Pieknik said part of her was hesitant to try playing the sport at first, but the other part of her was sure she wanted to give it a shot. "I want try it, just to say I can do it," she said. Pieknik is from Farmington Hills but now lives at Fox Run retirement community in Novi. Pieknik, who is also big fan of the Detroit Red Wings, said her team was very excited for her when she scored her first goal. Harrison High Swimmer Marina Borri Shines at National YMCA Championship

Farmington team member places eighth in breaststroke at North Carolina meet.

A varsity star from the Harrison Hawks, 17-year-old senior Marina Borri, scored the only points for the Farmington Family YMCA Stingrays team at a four-day national swimming meet in Greensboro, NC. She finished eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke, earning 15 points to put her YMCA group in 61st place among 100 teams. The YMCA Short-Course National Championship ended Thursday. The Harrison High student is the daughter of Maria and Joseph Borri of Farmington. Her 14-year-old sister Julia swims for the Stingrays' regional zone team.   Among other Metro Detroit teams, a standout was 16-year-old Dakota High swimmer Marah Pugh of Macomb Township. Local Swimmers Compete in YMCA National Championship Events This Week

Dozens of Southeast Michigan's leading young swimmers begin today to compete in Greensboro, NC, in a four-day national championship meet. Teams from Birmingham, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and four other area communities will compete against youths from around the country at the YMCA Short Course National Championship. Individual and relay events run Monday through Thursday. Two dozen members of the Birmingham Blue Dolphins (BBD), representing the Birmingham Family YMCA, are making that team's 42nd appearance at the nationals. Its competitors, aged 12-18, are from 12 public and private schools around the region – including two middle schools. BBD swimmers in 2011 earned three first-place medals and finished ninth overall. Farmington Produces 3 All-State Wrestlers

Farmington’s Immanuel Govantes finishes in fourth place, North Farmington’s Kevin Miller finishes in fifth place and Harrison’s Andrew Fialka finishes in seventh; all three athletes earn All-State status.

AUBURN HILLS - Farmington area wrestlers all found All-State success at The Palace of Auburn Hills in the MHSAA individual wrestling finals over the weekend. Wrestlers who placed in the top eight of each division achieved all-state status. Each area high school sent a wrestler to the podium on Saturday night for a medal. North Farmington senior Kevin Miller finished in fifth place in the 189 pound weight class with win over Walled Lake Central's Charles Sovel on a 6-3 decision. Miller started the tournament off strong with wins over Salem’s Jacob McCabe and Dakota Smith’s Grand Haven. He hit a road block when he locked up with his weight class’ eventual state title winner Kevin Beazley from Detroit Catholic Central. Beazley sent Miller to …
