Running Fit is uniting Michigan runners to show their support for Boston.
To celebrate the safe return of Boston Marathon runners and to show solidarity for Boston, Running Fit will be hosting a "Runners For Boston" run/walk this week. The unity 4.15 mile run/walk will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m.at Kensington Metropark, and participants should meet at the East Boat Launch. On the Running Fit website, Randy Step writes that running has taken on a new meaning for runners after the April 15 bombings. "Every step feels like a dedication to those who suffered. Just heading out the door is like thumbing our nose at terrorists that are out to change our way of life and limit our freedoms," he writes on the website. Charles Anthony, a Northville native and Farmington High School grad, wins 200-meter dash and places fifth in 100 meters at weekend Eastern Michigan University track meet.
The University of Detroit Mercy's Charles Anthony, a junior from Northville, won the 200-meter dash during the weekend's Eastern Michigan University Twilight outdoor meet in Ypsilanti. Anthony, a graduate of Farmington High School, beat 28 other sprinters with his time of 22.0, according to a Detroit Mercy press release, just missing his personal best of 21.98. The sprinter was fifth in the 100-meter dash with an 11.07 time in temperatures hovering around 40 degrees. He is the son of Charles Sr. and Theresa Anthony and majoring in civil engineering. Eleven members of the team will travel this month to the 2013 YMCA Short Course Nationals meet.
Farmington Family Stingray swimmers took second place in the 2013 Great Lakes Zone YMCA Swimming Championships, held March 15-17 at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. The 24 Stingrays were among 1,600 top YMCA swimmers from 100 teams represented the states of Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. Though small in numbers, the team was large in talent and heart, and proud to place just behind the Flint Falcons. The 15-and-over boys took home the high point award in their age group, and the 15-and-over girls placed second in their age group. The Stingrays were led by coaches Rich Bennetts and Robert Luke. The Raiders' run for the state title ended Monday.
North Farmington High School's hopes of winning a boys basketball regional title were squashed Monday night when the team lost to South Lyon, 52-32. According to an article in the Observer & Eccentric, Jeron Rogers was the high scorer for the Raiders with 11 points, followed by Caleb Hogans with 10 points. The team advanced to the regional semifinal after beating Walled Lake Central Friday night, 47-33, to win the district title. The team ends the season with a 15-6 overall record. Grand Ledge won first place for the sixth consecutive year.
The Farmington United gymnastics team won third place in the state competition Friday. Grand Ledge won the state title for the sixth year in a row with a total score of 149.350. Canton followed in second place with a total score of 145.750, and Farmington came in third with a score of 141.475. You can view the breakdown of the team's scores for vault, bars, beam and floor at the MHSAA website. According to the MHSAA, Farmington qualified for the state competition by winning its regional competition on March 2 with a score of 142.950.
