Marigold Kent Celebrates Early with 100th Birthday Party at Farmington Place

The soon-to-be centenarian's granddaughter says residents at the senior high-rise have have filled her grandmother's golden years with joy.

A week from Monday, Marigold Kent will officially be 100 years old. But friends and family – from as far away as California and Tennessee – decided to celebrate a little early.  On Friday, they surprised Kent with a birthday party in the community room at Farmington Place on Grand River in Farmington. She entered the room to a warm round of applause from the dozens of guests who came out to honor the much-loved mother, grandmother and friend.  Kent seemed overwhelmed by all the attention; Farmington Mayor Tom Buck delivered a proclamation, as did State Rep. Vicki Barnett (D-37th District). Barnett's was signed by her, State Sen. Vince Gregory and Gov. Rick Snyder. "Father Time is not always a hard parent," Barnett read, "and though he …

Parties Abound for Farmington Hills Centenarian

After celebrating with family and friends all around town, Edna Black is 'partied out.'

On Wednesday afternoon, Edna Black gathered with yet another group of her many friends to celebrate her 100th birthday. After events with family, her Sunday school class and the Nardineers seniors group that meets at Nardin Park United Methodist Church, she enjoyed birthday cake Wednesday at the city of Farmington Hills' Senex respite care program. "I'm partied out," Black said after singing along with such classic tunes as "The Band Played On" and "My Wild Irish Rose," played by Rose Paulus on the piano. Born Sept. 22, 1911, Black grew up just four blocks from the Belle Isle Bridge in Detroit. "I had a wonderful childhood," she said.
