Farmington Hills Candidate Forum: 14th Congressional District

The face-off between current 9th District Congressman Gary Peters and Republican challenger John Hauler was the liveliest during the three-hour event.

This is one in a series of articles on a three-hour candidate forum held Tuesday at Farmington Hills city hall. The event was hosted by the Council of Homeowners Associations, the League of Women Voters Oakland Area (LWVOA) and the City of Farmington Hills Committee to Increase Voter Participation. The most lively discussion of Tuesday night's candidate forum at Farmington Hills city hall involved candidates for the newly drawn 14th Congressional District. Republican John Hauler of Grosse Pointe Woods and current 9th District Congressman Gary Peters, a Democrat from Bloomfield Township, were in opposite corners on most issues raised by panelists.  Here are their responses to a few of the topics raised: Peters said the AHCA will slow the …

OPINION: Hauler Says Peters Authored Bill That Funds Jobs in Finland

The 14th Congressional District Republican candidate says some of the loan guarantees in his Democratic opponent's legislation is sending jobs overseas.

Gary Peters claims that he saved the auto industry in Michigan, however the real story has a very different ending. The truth is that Gary Peters is proud of making loan guarantees through the bill he authored titled the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act. Where did some of that loan money go? He wants to double down on a program that creates jobs for Europeans, not Americans. …

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Farmington Hills Rabbi Endorses Gary Peters in 14th Congressional Primary

Rabbi Jason Miller says Peters is 'genuine and speaks his mind.'

To the editor: Each time I hear my congressman Rep. Gary Peters speak I like him more. Gary isn't your typical politician, which means that he's actually genuine and speaks his mind. He is knowledgeable on the issues that are important to me and has surrounded himself with a capable, talented staff. I've had the pleasure of discussing many serious topics with him and he has impressed me with his thoughtfulness and candor without fail. I don't take the term "representative" lightly. I sincerely feel that I am being represented well in Washington because Gary Peters is in office. I fully endorse his candidacy and hope that he will continue to serve my district to the best of his ability. On August 7, I will cast my ballot for Rep. Gary …

Peters Attacks Romney on Auto Jobs Stance Following GOP Debate

The incumbent Democrat seeking re-election in a new district calls out Bloomfield Hills native for opposing auto loans.

U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township) accused Republican presidential candidate and Bloomfield Hills native Mitt Romney of "throwing in the towel on Michigan jobs" following statements Romney made during last night's televised debate from New Hampshire. "I don’t understand why Mitt Romney supports using tax dollars to protect Wall Street while opposing loans to help our auto manufacturers get back on their feet,” Peters said in a press release from his campaign office Wednesday. Peters, who currently represents Farmington and Farmington Hills, was particularly chapped by comments Romney made that supported bank bailouts, but not loans to General Motors and Chrysler. "Should they have used the funds to bail out General Motors and …

Peters Announces Decision to Run in the 14th District

The move will likely pit Congressman Gary Peters against his colleague and fellow Democrat Hansen Clarke.

In a Facebook post and email message to supporters this afternoon, Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th Congressional) announced his intention to run in the newly drawn 14th Congressional District. The district includes Farmington Hills, but not Farmington, which will fall into the 11th Congressional District. His decision will likely pit Peters against Rep. Hansen Clarke (D-13th Congressional) in a 2012 Democratic primary; Clarke has also announced he will run for the seat. The S-shaped district, created through reapportionment after the 2010 Census, includes communities in Oakland and Wayne counties. Peters' Facebook post noted the new district "bridges diverse communities and comes at a pivotal time in our nation's history. Too many families …
