Seniors Learn About Buddhist Psychology, Civil War and More in Farmington Hills

The Adult Learning Institute offers classes and camaraderie for those ages 55 and over at Oakland Community College’s Orchard Ridge Campus.

After Edna Rubin of Oak Park had retired from her career as a teacher, and after her grandchildren were in school full-time, she decided it was time to change focus. “I thought to myself, ‘This is a different lifestyle, and now it’s time for me,’” Rubin said. Last fall, Rubin enrolled in the Adult Learning Institute (ALI) at Oakland Community College's Orchard Ridge campus in Farmington Hills. ALI brings together more than 150 retired and semi-retired people, ages 55 and above, for courses on a variety of topics.  Carl Muma of Bingham Farms joined the group five years ago and is currently the president of ALI’s executive committee. “The goal of the program is to keep the maturing population alert and learning,” said Muma. “These people ask…

The Queen of Hearts Raffle sponsored by the Farmington Rotary and Xemplar clubs is heating up, with a jackpot climbing into five figures.

Where can you buy a chance to win a jackpot that is climbing over $10,000, while helping out two local civic groups? Read on:  Looks like we'll have a sunny day with temperatures in the 80s. The National Weather Service predicts a 30 percent chance of showers after 2 a.m. tonight, and a low in the mid-60s.  The Farmington/Farmington Hills Democratic Club and the Farmington Area Republicans have both cancelled their regularly scheduled meetings tonight and will meet again on Sept. 19.  The Farmington Rotary and Xemplar Clubs are selling tickets for this event, and there has never been a better time to buy one. As you receive your new, larger recycling bin, remember that Farmington Schools can make use of your old one.

As Waste Management rolls out wheeled recycling bins in Farmington and Farmington Hills, your old bin can inspire future generations of environmentalists.  Here's what else you should know today:   Once you've got your new, larger recycling bin, you can donate your old bin to Farmington Public Schools' recycling program. Bins can be dropped off at the FPS Facilities Maintenance Building, 29350 10 Mile Rd. (northwest corner at Middlebelt) or the City of Farmington Hills Public Works Building, 27245 Halsted Rd.   Our warm-up continues today, with temperatures climbing back into the 60s. The National Weather Service predicts a mostly sunny and breezy day, with winds gusting to 29 miles per hour. The winds die down tonight, as the mercury dips to around 39.  Oakland County Commissioner Bill Dwyer (R-14th District) meets with local seniors today at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. He'll be there at 11:30 a.m. to talk about what's going on in Pontiac and answer questions.
