Red Cross Issues Urgent Plea for Blood Donations

Area blood supplies are low due to cold and flu season, and the Red Cross is asking for help.

A recent outbreak of colds and influenza in southeast Michigan has caused many individuals who had intended to donate blood to tell the Red Cross they can't give right now due to illness. Unfortunately, that means the blood supply in local hospitals and medical facilities in southeast Michigan is dwindling quickly, causing the Red Cross to issue an urgent plea for healthy blood donors to step forward and give. "The Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region must collect 900 units of blood each and every day to support the needs of our local hospitals," said Martha Kurtz, communications associate for the Red Cross. "Our blood donors are so supportive, we felt if they knew about our current situation, they’d understand how much we need and …

Blood Donors Needed for Suburban Collection's 'Drive to Save Lives'

Donors who give blood at the Feb. 13 blood drive will be entered to win a 60-inch flat screen TV, among other prizes.

As southeast Michigan's 43 area hospitals struggle to provide enough blood products to meet the needs of patients, the Suburban Collection is preparing to host its fifth annual American Red Cross "Drive to Save Lives" blood drive in an effort to bolster the local blood supply. "On Feb. 13, old and new donors alike can provide an early Valentine’s Day gift to their community by visiting one of the blood drives at five of The Suburban Collection dealerships," said Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region CEO Diane E. Ward. "The Red Cross is thankful for The Suburban Collection’s sponsorship and for the many donors who will join in our life-saving mission." American Red Cross nurses and volunteers will staff these five different blood …

Red Cross Issues Urgent Call for Blood, Platelet Donations

Local blood and platelet supplies are dangerously low, says American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross is asking anyone who is eligible to donate blood or platelets to do so as soon as possible, warning that local supplies are currently insufficient to meet the needs of our community’s hospitals in a timely manner. The Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross needs 900 units of life-saving blood each and every day, according to a press release from the American Red Cross. To get as many donations as possible with the greatest efficiency, Red Cross officials are asking eligible blood and platelet donors to make appointments or to keep the appointments they have already made. To make an appointment, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors can also click here …

Fire or Police? You Decide in Battle of the Badges Blood Drive

Farmington Hills Fire Dept. aims to hold onto its title in this annual friendly competition.

Farmington Hills Fire Dept. looks to hold onto a special title Thursday, in the annual Battle of the Badges blood drive held from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Costick Center. In this friendly competition, participants can cast a “vote” with their blood donation to help raise the tally of either department. In 2010, final tally was 36 votes for the Police Dept. and 48 for the Fire Dept. – and a handful of donors refused to take side.  According to the American Red Cross, August is traditionally the most difficult month to collect donations and local inventories often fall to critically low levels. All blood types are needed, with Type O in especially high demand since it can be transfused to patients in other blood groups and is used in most …

Local Red Cross Blood Drives Help Meet Critical Need

Eight blood drives will be held in Farmington and Farmington Hills over the next nine days.

The American Red Cross this week put out a call for donors, and there are eight opportunities for you to answer that call locally over the next eight days. Many donors are busy or traveling, school is out of session and donations have dropped dramatically. In May and June, while demand for blood products remained steady, donations were at the lowest level the Red Cross has seen during this timeframe in over a dozen years. Because of that, the Red Cross needs blood donors now more than ever. All types are needed, but especially O negative, which can be used to treat any patient. If you are are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on height) and are …
