Nominations close March 18 for the 2013 Artist-in-Residence and Distinguished Service to the Arts awards.
The Farmington Area Arts Commission has opened nominations for the Farmington Area 2013 Artist-in-Residence and Distinguished Service to the Arts awards. Each year, the Commission presents the awards to celebrate the positive spirit of the arts and how arts contribute to the community. Last year’s awardees were basket artist Allen Brown (Artist-in-Residence) and Cynthia and Brian Tupper of the Farmington Players (Distinguished Service to the Arts). Each year since 1976, the Commission has recognized talented individuals in visual art, drama, dance, literature, music, photography, film or music. The artists will be honored at an awards ceremony held April 19 at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills.
Members of the local arts community will be honored during this year's Festival of the Arts celebration, held April 19-21 at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. The 2012 Artist in Residence is William Allen Brown, a talented basket weaver whose free-form creations include natural fibers woven into fluent shapes. Brown never creates two baskets alike but lets the materials, which may include horns or antlers, determine the direction of the design. He is a member of the Association of Michigan Basketmakers and the National Basket Organization and has won awards at many shows over the years. The Farmington Area Arts Commission is accepting applications until March 12 for the Farmington Area 2012 Artist-in-Residence and Distinguished Service to the Arts awards. Last year’s honorees were painter Robbie Best (Artist-in-Residence) and Mercedes-Benz Financial Services (Distinguished Service to the Arts). Each year since 1976, the commission has recognized outstanding residents in visual art, drama, dance, literature, music, photography, film or music. To qualify, the Artist-in-Residence must currently reside in Farmington or Farmington Hills.
