Shop Downtown Farmington and Win Wish List Window Prizes

In its fourth year, the "shop local" promotion has doubled in size and will award 11 prize packages valued at more than $600 each.

The Downtown Farmington Wish List Window is more crowded than ever this year, as twice the number of merchants are participating in the "shop local" campaign.   Located at 33317 Grand River Ave., next to the Village Mall merchants, the window is filled with gift certificates and merchandise from stores within the Farmington Downtown Development Authority (DDA) district.  From Nov. 23 through Dec. 17, shoppers can pick up a stamp card at any participating location. Merchants will stamp the card with each purchase, and for every $100 you spend, your name is entered into the Wish List Window prize package drawing. Each of 11 winners will receive a prize package worth approximately $600, and the total value of the window is more than $6,000. A…

"Make sure you're comfortable," O'Malley said, sharing that she often sees Black Friday shoppers at the mall in pajamas and slippers. Is it comfy? Then go for it! Black Friday Moves to Thanksgiving Day for Some Farmington Area Retailers

A group of chain store employees petition for a return to stores remaining closed Thanksgiving Day. Take our poll and tell us what you think.

While Walmart and Target have announced they will start their Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving Day, Farmington-Farmington Patch readers say they'll be staying home to enjoy the holiday.  According to USA Today, Kmart shoppers since 1991 have been able to pick up Thanksgiving deals from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., then from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday.  Last week, employees from Target and Walmart launched petitions at Change.org, demanding that retailers close Thanksgiving Day, CBS Detroit reported Nov. 12. According to a CNN.com report, Walmart employees plan a walkout on Thursday, to protest the company opening its doors on the holiday. Patch blogger Kenneth Reynolds last week slammed Black Friday and its steady creep into Thanksgiving Day, and …

The only way "holiday creep" (Black Friday on Thanksgiving, Christmas music and advertising in October/early November, etc.) will end is if consumers stop responding to it and demand better. It's mostly about refusing to shop on Thanksgiving Day and refusing to patronize stores/radio stations that start the music and advertising too early, but it also means the media have to stop featuring …   more ›

Shoppers in Novi Clamor for Black Friday Specials

Shoppers came out in droves to take advantage of Black Friday deals at numerous stores around Novi.

Christmas is one month from today. For self-confessed super shoppers like me, it's the time of year we really look forward to with lots and lots of discounts. Black Friday actually began on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, for many retailers. Toys 'R' Us opened at 9 p.m. Thursday. So many people showed up to the West Oaks II location in Novi, that shoppers had to line up outside the door and be let in a few dozen at a time. Across the street, shoppers waited Thanksgiving night in 40-degree temperatures outside Novi's Best Buy store hoping to grab a good deal, like a 42 inch TV for $200. "It was worth missing Thanksgiving to get the sales" said fourteen-year old Taylor Bunch who came from Taylor and and got in line around 11 a.m. Wednesday to be…

Customers Await Black Friday Deals at Best Buy in Farmington Hills

A 42"-inch TV, PS3 and Blue-ray Disc Player among the most sought after items.

Sneed Mouzon was waiting patiently Thursday for his Thanksgiving meal - but instead of being around the table for his feast, he'll eat it outside of the Best Buy in Farmington Hills where he is among about two dozen people in line for Black Friday deals. The 36-year-old Brownstown resident, in line since 5 p.m. Wednesday, said his father was going to bring him Thanksgiving dinner while he and his brother were in line. Between the two of them they expect to save money on Xbox360s going from $199, normally about $400. James Henderson, 22, of Bloomfield Hills had been waiting since 10 p.m. Wednesday. "You can get some great deals," he said, hoping he'll nab one of the 42" Class LCD 1080p HDTV TV's by Sharp for $199.99. According to the Best …

Novi Road Reopens to Traffic

After more than seven months of construction, the new bridge opened Wednesday.

Novi Road between 10 Mile Road and Grand River Avenue in Novi has reopened to traffic just in time for the holidays. The $25 million project included building a bridge over the railroad tracks so traffic could flow without being disrupted by trains. The road was also expanded to five lanes, and walking paths were added on both sides. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon, Novi Mayor Bob Gatt thanked Novi residents, visitors and businesses for their patience during the construction. "For years, we've called this project the Novi Road Link, and the meaning became apparent this year while the roadway was under construction," Gatt said. "Not only is it a major link between the north and south ends of our city, it's also an …

Black Friday Shopping Starts Early This Year

Macy's, Kohl's, Target and Best Buy will open their doors at midnight on Nov. 25.

It will be a little harder to tell where Thanksgiving ends and Black Friday begins this year, as several big box stores open their doors at midnight Nov. 25 in preparation for the biggest shopping day of the year. Macy's, Kohl's, Target and Best Buy will open earlier than ever before. Last year, stores opened at 4 a.m. Kristy Welker, a spokesperson for Target, said they are changing their hours this year for customer convenience. "Every holiday at Target is different," Welker said. "We work hard to ensure the entire experience delivers on what our guests want and need. We have heard from our guests that they want Target to be their first stop for their Black Friday shopping. By opening at midnight, we are making it easier than ever for our…
