Groves-Walker Post 346 holds its annual ceremony in Memorial Park Saturday.
Each year, representatives from the American Legion Groves-Walker Post #346 gather at the war memorial in Farmington's Memorial Park on the first Saturday in December, to honor local veterans. Memorial wreaths, placed by Post Commander Ralph Philp, Miss Farmington Elise Newcomer and Farmington resident Brian Golden, honor and remember troops lost in battle, Philp said. But they are also a reminder to think of America's veterans during the holiday season and all year through. "That's what the goal of the Legion is, to help the veterans and the troops," he said. Miss Farmington Elise Newcomer met Wednesday with representatives from American Legion Groves-Walker Post #346, Serra Toyota and the Michigan Veterans Foundation (MVF), Detroit chapter, to kick off her Blizzard Buddies clothing collection. From now through Dec. 10, five drop-off locations in Farmington and Farmington Hills will accept new and gently used winter coats, boots, scarves and mittens for distribution to homeless veterans and needy families in the Joy-Southfield area of Detroit. Newcomer volunteers with the Joy Southfield Development Corporation, which operates a clinic and provides services in that neighborhood.
