Farmington Hills Student Enjoys Exciting Year After Winning Video Contest

Hailey Samples encourages students to enter 2013 'Make the Play for Healthy Habits' contest. First prize is a visit from Lions QB Matthew Stafford.

Hailey Samples has had an exciting year since winning the 2012 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BSBSM) "Make the Play for Healthy Habits" video contest.  Now a 6th grader at The Roeper School, Hailey thrilled her schoolmates at Warner Upper Elementary School last May by earning a visit from Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford with her tips for staying fit and healthy. Since then, she has made three video blogs. "The first one was an interview with Matthew Stafford," Hailey said. "The second was about staying active and being fit." For the third, Hailey and her mother Sheilah, who did the camera work, visited a local grocery store for a segment about eating healthy.  "Since I talked about different categories in my video, I …

At Warner Upper Elementary, Detroit Lions QB Encourages Healthy Habits

Hailey Samples, a 5th grader, won the Wednesday assembly with Matthew Stafford as part of a Blue Cross Blue Shield video competition.

Hailey Samples admits she was a little nervous as she sat in front about 1,000 of her Warner Upper Elementary schoolmates Wednesday afternoon.  "I've never been in a crowd that big before, like, in front of them," said the 5th grader, who won the assembly with Detriot Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford through the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) "Make the Play" competition.  Hailey, with the help of her mother, Sheilah Samples, produced a video sharing her best tips for staying healthy. As a finalist, she rounded up the support of family and friends in an online voting campaign last month. She learned on May 7 that her video took top honors.  BCBS vice president of corporate communications Andy Hetzel said Wednesday that Hailey was actually …

Warner 5th Grader Wins Visit from Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford

Hailey Samples' video took tops honors in the Blue Cross Blue Shield 'Make the Play' competition.

Warner Upper Elementary School student Hailey Samples learned her video won the Blue Cross Blue Shield "Make the Play" competition even before her mother had a chance to give her the news.  Hailey, a 5th grader, opened up a laptop computer in her classroom Monday morning, when contest results were announced on the competition website.  "I saw my name in big letters, and I got really excited," Hailey said Thursday. Her classmates "were yelling and clapping, and they were all excited."  Sheilah Samples received a phone call about her daughter's win, but by the time they connected, Hailey had already seen the website. "That was really a better way for her to find out," Sheilah Samples said.  Hailey and Forest Elementary 4th grader Jalen …

Farmington Hills Students Share Their Tips in 'A Healthier Michigan' Contest

Jalen Johnson and Hailey Samples await the results of a video competition, which will be released May 7.

The votes have been cast, and now two Farmington Hills students are waiting to learn whether they've earned a regular video blogging gig – and a school visit from Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Warner Upper Elementary 5th grader Hailey Samples and Forest Elementary 4th grader Jalen Johnson both created videos for the Blue Cross Blue Shield “Make the Play” contest. Since April 13, they've been rallying classmates, teachers, friends and family members to cast votes at ahealthiermichigan.org. Voting closed April 25.  Jalen's father, Hugh Johnson, told his son about the contest. They created a script, Jalen said, "and we did some stuff on our own." The video, which starts with Jalen doing a cartwheel, focuses on exercise and the …
