ACO Home, Garden & Hardware plans to shut down under-performing stores in the region. Stores in Farmington and Farmington Hills are not affected.
Farmington Hills-based ACO Home, Garden & Hardware has announced plans to close 14 local stores. Michigan's largest independent hardware retailer announced Thursday that the plan to shut down the under-performing stores aims to "improve and strengthen the company’s financial performance." Stores in Farmington and Farmington Hills are not affected. “To ensure our long term growth and sustainability, we must always strive to manage our costs and allocate resources to areas of our business that make a meaningful contribution to our financial performance," President and CEO Dick Snyder said in a news release. Jeff Wenzel and his business partner Shawn Neal of Detroit say their business model keeps their services free to the bands they help.
Farmington resident Jeff Wenzel and his business partner Shawn Neal of Detroit say they're helping bands all over the world raise the funds needed to record their music – all at no charge to the bands. Through their Detroit-based incubator project, Groovebox Studios, the duo has over the past two years recorded more than 150 bands from all over the world, raising more than $100,000 in capital for full-length EPs (extended play albums) and a small national tour. “The birth of Groovebox Studios was a very deliberate effort,” Wenzel said. “Deliberate, in the sense that it was more than building the business plan, finding out the quirks in the model, ensuring the equipment was always top notch ... it was connecting an artistic community and …

Opened in February, Title Boxing Club has seen steady growth as clients spread the word about the unique regimen.
Title Boxing Club, one of the nation's fastest growing franchises, is also growing in Farmington Hills. The club on Haggerty just south of 14 Mile Road has drawn around 200 members since opening in late February. Owner Ashok Kumar said he and his wife invested in a franchise because they liked the business model and learned the work-out is "amazing". "When I did it and my wife it, we were sold on it," he said. "It is very different. People will even keep their other memberships and come here as well." Instructors take clients through a fast-moving routine that combines punching a body bag with exercises like jumping jacks and lunges, to build core strength. "When your heart is pumping, that's the best time to work your core," Kumar said…

Hershey's Ice Cream will soon have a new name and offer a selection of fancy pastries to go along with dipped and soft serve ice cream.
After 30 years in downtown Farmington, Hershey's Ice Cream on Farmington Road looked quite different when the store opened in April. "We're half the store we used to be," new manager Jackie Reaume said. Benches along the south wall are gone, as is one of the ice cream cases. "There was not much seating in the restaurant (located next door), and when we looked at this space, we had a waste of space." The extra square footage will mean more seating for the Mediterranean-themed restaurant when it opens sometime later this spring, she said. In addition to physical downsizing, Reaume has reduced the number of flavors offered, to focus on the ones most popular with customers. She also eliminated smoothies, which she pointed out are sold at …

Grove Street will be closed for reconstruction from Grand River to Orchard Street, with staging of the site to begin Friday.
With the turn of a shovel, the reconstruction of Grove Street in downtown Farmington launched on Thursday, a few days later than city officials had hoped. Mayor Tom Buck said the hang up was over paperwork for a property transfer between the City of Farmington and Manifold Ventures, owner of The Groves shopping center. The original plan was for construction to be done by the Downtown Farmington Founders Festival in mid-July, which still may happen, he added. Crews will remove the concrete on Grove, from Grand River to Orchard Street, and install an asphalt street with a boulevard and on-street parking, stamped concrete sidewalks and a look similar to the existing downtown Farmington streetscape. Representing Manifold Ventures, partner …

Amazing sushi place. We have been regular customers since shortly after they opened. My college daughter's "must go there" place when she is home from college. Love the variety of sushi rolls they serve. Also, the Bi Bim Bap is quite good (Korean dish served in a hot, stone bowl) - we always order that along with the Sushi. Service has been spotty on a few occasions but the food is always …   more ›
