Flagging Call to Action Coalition May Merge with Commission on Children, Youth and Families

Farmington Hills city council members learned Monday that the Commission for Children, Youth and Families may help the flagging non-profit.

A Farmington-area nonprofit focused on preventing substance abuse and domestic violence may get a new lease on life, under the umbrella of the Commission on Children, Youth and Families.  The Call to Action Coalition (CTAC), which hosts an annual breakfast and funds the BABES (Beginning Alcohol Addiction Basic Education Study) program, has struggled since the retirement of Estralee Michaelson, who also served as Farmington Public Schools director of Safe Schools and Student Services. CTAC member Mitch Seelye said the Coalition "kind of fell apart" when Michaelson left. Breakfast in Farmington Hills Kicks Off Call to Action Coalition's Year

As a new director takes over the community organization, the event's theme is "It Begins with Me."

Randy Field kicked off his term as leader of the Farmington/Farmington Hills Call to Action Coalition (CTAC) on Friday morning at an annual breakfast attended by about 100 elected officials, law enforcement officers and community volunteers at Vladimir's banquet center in Farmington Hills. In its 23rd year, the event's theme was "It Begins with Me," taken from a piece of art Field found at Arts, Beats and Eats in Royal Oak on Labor Day weekend. Field takes over for Estralee Michaelson, who stepped down in June, when her position as director of safe schools for Farmington Public Schools was eliminated. Xemplars Hand 21 Checks to Farmington, Hills Organizations

The civic organization distributes more than $20,000 Wednesday.

The Farmington-Farmington Hills Exemplar Club presented checks to 21 local organizations, distributing more than $20,000 Wednesday at John Cowley & Sons in Farmington. The club's director of community relations, Richard Lerner, emceed the noon meeting, with Nancy Cook and club president Steve Joppich presenting the over-sized checks. In keeping with its motto, “Give back. Be Xemplar”, the organization raises funds during the year for local distribution. Their largest annual event is the Jon Grant Signature Classic, a golf tournament held in June.
