Unity, S.O.U.L. Partner to Give Families in Need a Merry Christmas

The church and non-profit celebrate the Christmas spirit at a Dec. 22 party.

Unity of Farmington Hills, in partnership with S.O.U.L. (Source of Universal Love), a local nonprofit, supported 56 families in need over the Christmas holiday through its Pick A Mitten drive. The two organizations held a Christmas party on Dec. 22 that was attended by 150 families and volunteers who helped serve cookies and cocoa. The day included visits and photos with Santa, music, and a holiday craft. Unity's music director Dr. Emry Stephens led the group in singing holiday songs. The party and Pick a Mitten drive were so successful that Unity plans to make them annual events. Before he went back to the North Pole today, Santa made several stops in Farmington and Farmington Hills. We weren't there for all of his visits, but wanted to share our favorite memories of the Jolly Old Elf. Feel free to share your own by clicking the "Upload Photos and Videos" button.

Turn to God for Strength, Hope as Christmas Approaches

As the nation mourns the deaths of students at Sandy Hook Elementary School, local pastors remind Dexter residents that God's love will prevail.

By Rev. Larry Van Slambrook St. Andrew's United Church of Christ, Dexter From Thanksgiving Day on, it seemed as though you could sense a growing atmosphere of joy and happiness in anticipation of the upcoming celebration of Christmas. The stores filled with shoppers, the lighted trees and carol singing all added to the joy of the season. Then came the news of the massacre of 20 children and 6 adults in Newtown, Conn. last Friday, which sent shock waves all across this country. We have felt the grief and pain of the parents and families of these children whose lives were taken and the adults who died trying to protect them. How can we celebrate Christmas in the wake of this tragedy? What can help us find peace and joy in the midst of this …

Where's Santa? Track Him Live from Farmington or Farmington Hills!

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has a website that now offers a Santa tracker mobile app to follow the jolly man's magical flight.

They sent him their wish lists, sat on his lap, and left cookies and milk for his arrival. Now the only thing left for children in Farmington and Farmington Hills to do is track Santa's progress as he delivers gifts around the world on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Commander-in-Chief’s operations, according to a description on the NORAD Tracks Santa …
