Donate Gifts to Ensure People with Mental Illness Enjoy Christmas

Community Network Services in Farmington Hills has put together a "wish list" of items like hats, scarves, journals and calendars to brighten the holiday season for clients.

Farmington Hills-based Community Network Services (CNS), Oakland County’s largest provider of comprehensive behavioral health services to adults with serious mental illness, has announced its 2012 Holiday Wish List campaign, to provide modest gifts for clients who might not otherwise have a Christmas. Items requested include scarves, fleece throws, gloves, hats, journals, mugs filled with candy, calendars and toiletry kits, for men and women. The full list is posted with this article as a PDF. People with serious mental illness often lead lives of significant disadvantage and, for many, discrimination. Farmington Hills Man Finds Help Through County Mental Health Program

Ken Knowles, who was diagnosed with a serious mental illness in 1982, says a clubhouse in Walled Lake keeps him busy and offers help finding employment.

Ken Knowles was at the top of his class at Eastern Michigan University in 1977, on his way to earning a degree in social work.  Everything changed in 1982, when he was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder, which affects his thoughts and moods. Today, the 56-year-old lives with his sister in Farmington Hills and is trying to find work, with resources available to him through Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority (OCCMHA). He is a regular at the Community Network Services (CNS) Our House Clubhouse in Walled Lake.  "I eat better. I have friends.
