A June 6 blood drive in Farmington Hills will honor those who were injured or killed in the Boston Marathon bombings. Sponsored by the Southeastern Michigan branch of the American Red Cross, the drive will be held from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Costick Center, 28600 W. 11 Mile Road. It is also designed to raise awareness of the need for blood when emergencies or disasters strike. “Blood donations usually increase after disasters such as the Boston Marathon bombing,” said Diane Ward, CEO for the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region. “Tragedies can often motivate people to donate blood, but it’s important to realize that blood is needed year-round to help hospitals serve patient needs.” Last year, about 8 million Americans gave about…

Pick up bicycling tips during a May 14 event at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills.
The City of Farmington Hills Center for Active Adults is calling all bicyclists age 50 and better to form a new and enthusiastic Bicycling Club. The goals of the club are to promote bicycle safety, to establish new area trails, and to meet fellow riders and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. This is an exciting opportunity to help map designated trails throughout the community and help make Farmington Hills and Farmington a destination area for bicyclists. Representatives from D & D Bicycles will give an informative presentation with tips for bicyclists of all skill levels on May 14, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. The Foundation's activities include free painting classes for Farmington area senior citizens and the 'Art Smart' program in local schools.
The Farmington Art Foundation, which fosters a love of art in area residents of all ages, received the Distinguished Service to the Arts award during a Thursday ceremony at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. Presented by the Farmington Area Arts Commission, the award honors groups or individuals for outstanding promotion, management, teaching or support of the arts. Foundation president Janet Hall said her group's mission is "to educate our members and the community about art." She started painting after retiring 10 years ago and joined the Foundation in 2008. The Farmington Area Commission on Aging and City of Farmington Hills Senior Division honored five senior volunteers during an April 11 breakfast at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. The Commission on Aging recognized Sue Mikolajczak with a Gold Award and Mary Larson with the Maggie Loridas Diamond Award. The Senior Division recognized Carol Johnston with the Robert A. Eastman S.A.G.E. Award, Bettie McIntire with the Loretta C. Conway Senior Division Award, and Galey DiMercurio with the Aldo Vagnozzi Spirit Award. Celebrate this year’s Festival of the Arts theme, “Color the World”, at Saturday's free Family Festival, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. The Family Festival offers art experiences for all ages including community cultural displays by area organizations, activities, a wide range of entertainment, and over 200 pieces of art to see and buy. The Farmington Art Foundation (FAF) will host its annual Spring Exhibit and Sale April 18-20, during the Festival of the Arts celebration at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills.
