Farmington Hills resident Madelyn Karoub, 17, recently won a close competition that could help launch her modeling career. Karoub was the winner in Model Launcher's Green-themed contest for girls 17 through 20. Contestants were asked to submit nonprofessional photos in a favorite green outfit to participate, and public voting determined the winner. “Madelyn’s win for the Green contest was very intense,” Model Launcher CEO and founder Bill Staniford said. “Madelyn is a very sweet girl. She’s dazzling, ambitious, and knows what she wants. I know she will have countless opportunities in the future." The Madrigal Chorale, North Farmington and Detroit Country Day choirs will perform at 5 p.m.
A special benefit concert held today at North Farmington High School will raise funds and awareness for an organization that helps low-income families find stable housing. The Madrigal Chorale (MCS) performs with the North Farmington High and Detroit Country Day School choirs at 5 p.m., to benefit Habitat for Humanity. A free-will offering will be taken for the organization, and Brad Irwin, Habitat's director of partnerships, plans to speak. "I'm hopeful that we'll have a Habitat for Humanity homeowner," he said. "That's the real story ... I think it will make a bigger impression on the audience than anything I can say." Birmingham Blue Dolphins, other area teams participate in North Carolina meet.
Dozens of Southeast Michigan's leading young swimmers begin today to compete in Greensboro, NC, in a four-day national championship meet. Teams from Birmingham, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and four other area communities will compete against youths from around the country at the YMCA Short Course National Championship. Individual and relay events run Monday through Thursday. Two dozen members of the Birmingham Blue Dolphins (BBD), representing the Birmingham Family YMCA, are making that team's 42nd appearance at the nationals. Its competitors, aged 12-18, are from 12 public and private schools around the region – including two middle schools. BBD swimmers in 2011 earned three first-place medals and finished ninth overall.
