Settlement Clears Way for High-Tech Signals at Roundabouts

Technologically advanced traffic signals which aid the blind and people with disabilities could come to roundabouts as part of the Northwestern Connector project, per the settlement.

Oakland County roads officials agreed to seek approval to install technologically advanced traffic signals at a West Bloomfield roundabout as a result of settlement of a lawsuit contending that pedestrians with disabilities are at danger without such devices. Attorney Richard Bernstein, who lives in Birmingham and has offices in Farmington Hills, contended in the lawsuit that blind and disabled pedestrians were at danger. The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) on Thursday agreed with Bernstein, and said it would seek approval from state and federal traffic organizations on installing High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacons at the roundabout at the intersection of 14 Mile and Farmington roads. If anyone has read the study they could see these intersections would be expected to have issues and are likely to continue to have them after the implementation of hybrid beacons. I also count about 9 confounding variables in the report. Novi Road Reopens to Traffic

After more than seven months of construction, the new bridge opened Wednesday.

Novi Road between 10 Mile Road and Grand River Avenue in Novi has reopened to traffic just in time for the holidays. The $25 million project included building a bridge over the railroad tracks so traffic could flow without being disrupted by trains. The road was also expanded to five lanes, and walking paths were added on both sides. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon, Novi Mayor Bob Gatt thanked Novi residents, visitors and businesses for their patience during the construction. "For years, we've called this project the Novi Road Link, and the meaning became apparent this year while the roadway was under construction," Gatt said. great bridge and sidewalk/biking trail. Should make it easier to get around town linking downtown to some of the southern neighborhoods. Hopefully business picks up along the new road.   more ›
