Although the temperature outside hovered at 18 degrees Wednesday night, it didn't stop the heated cheer competition inside the West Bloomfield High School auditorium. Varsity competition cheer teams from Clarkston, Farmington, Hazel Park, Royal Oak and West Bloomfield participated in the Oakland Athletic Association White Division League Cheer Competition to gain points in league standings. After the first round, judges scoring showed West Bloomfield in the lead with a point total of 209.1, Farmington in second at 204.9, Clarkston with 201.1, Hazel Park scoring 198.5 and Royal Oak with 173.9. The Farmington High hockey team's winning streak comes to an end, while Harrison's girls basketball team lands the second spot in division standings.
The Farmington High hockey team's winning streak came to an end this week, but the news was not all bad for area sports teams. Here's what happened: Farmington hockey The Falcons winning streak came to a grinding halt Wednesday, with a 3-1 loss to Rochester Stoney Creek. The Falcons gave up two goals in the first period and tried to fight back with one in the second frame, when defenseman Austin Meltzer slapped the puck home from the blue line with assists from Nick Kozoro and Roman Firestone on a power play. The score stayed that way until late in the third period, when Stoney Creek scored on the empty net. Hundreds show up to cheer as the Flyers take a 5-3 victory.
Hundreds of high school hockey fans watched Farmington Hills Unified (North Farmington-Harrison) top the Farmington High Falcons 5-3 Thursday in an exciting display of cross-town rivalry, at Farmington Hills Ice Arena. The game started with an even match-up between the two teams, who played to a 3-3 tie Nov. 23. The Falcons' Nick Kozoro was the first to score, with help from teammate Adam Lockner. The Flyers responded in the 2nd period with a goal by T.J. Zak. The Flyers took the lead with a goal from Jack Ladouceur, assisted by Ben Colenso, setting off a surge of excitement that led to another goal just 25 seconds later, with Ladouceur assisted by Stephen Coulter and Shane Moran. The love of sports supersedes race, ethnic and economic divisions.
You can see them all around the shopping malls up on Orchard Lake Road. They’re common sights not just in the dollar stores but also the more tony shops that dot the area. Of course they’re more than familiar in the bars and restaurants where TVs line the walls. In schools? For sure. Churches, synagogues and mosques?
