Farmington Players Production of 'Rabbit Hole' Opens Feb. 15

Directory Brian Tupper says the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama examines the healing process of parents who grieve after the accidental death of their son.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Rabbit Hole", described as "an uplifting tale of love and redemption, of healing and hope, with a touch of humor", opens Feb. 15 at the Farmington Players Barn in Farmington Hills.  Director Brian Tupper of Farmington Hills says the play examines "the healing process and how love and family can be an enduring foundation on which to build a way forward." The story relates how Becca, played by Laurel Stroud of Redford Township, and Howie, played by Jay McNeil of West Bloomfield, battle to return to “normal” after the accidental death of their son. Their contrasting styles of dealing with the tragedy are most stark in the way each relates to Jason (played by Joel Hunter of Commerce Twp.), the young man who …

Farmington Players 'Bonus' Show Features Edgy Broadway Hit

Director Allison Boufford says the community theater group hopes to attract younger audiences with 'Avenue Q'.

The Farmington Players takes aim at attracting a younger audience with its 2012-2013 season "bonus" show, Avenue Q. The quirky Broadway musical, which opens Friday, features actors and puppets in a story with decidedly adult themes, which is something "a little bit out of the box" for the Players, director Allison Boufford said. The local community theater group is among the first to produce the show.  Paying off the mortgage on the Barn Theater, located on 12 Mile west of Orchard Lake, has allowed the Players to choose "more edgy" material, the Northville resident said, adding, "It's so freeing to be able to explore different kinds of material."  Avenue Q follows Princeton, a recent college graduate, as he searches for his purpose in life…

Farmington Players Brings Back the Creepy

'Little Shop of Horrors' comes to the community theater stage April 27-May 19.

The Farmington Players stage now resembles a Little Shop of Horrors, as one of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows in history comes to the Barn, April 27-May 19.  In this classic musical, Seymour the naive floral assistant, played by Jason Wilhoite of Commerce Township, discovers an exotic plant (Audrey II) that sprouts like Jack’s Beanstalk. Audrey II offers Mushnick, the hapless flower shop owner played by Barry Cutler of Ferndale, the magic of its “Midas touch.” But the plant can only thrive if Seymour quenches its thirst for blood. Can the timid “schmuck” with a green thumb master the man-eater before it munches on everyone he knows? The show's music, by Alan Menken, and story, by Howard Ashman, mix rock, doo-wop and early Motown …
