A Thursday breakfast honors 24 students from Farmington and Farmington Hills who have contributed hundreds of hours to schools, churches and charities.
Some helped out at school, others traveled outside the U.S., but all 24 Farmington area students honored during a Thursday morning breakfast at Glen Oaks Country Club in Farmington Hills have given of their time and talents to others. Farmington Youth Assistance (FYA) hosted the annual celebration to recognize students for performing at least 100 hours of volunteer work not applied toward high school credit. Each was nominated by an adult, who was also invited to attend the event along with elected officials, city and school district leaders. Farmington Youth Assistance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening area youth and families through community involvement, is looking for volunteers to “adopt” a family in Farmington or Farmington Hills. The Holiday Angels program helps provide underprivileged families with clothing, toys, toiletries, and grocery and utility cards to make their holiday season a little brighter. “With the holidays around the corner, we’re rallying the community to help families who may need a little extra support this season,” said Maria Showich-Gallup, FYA board member and organizer of Holiday Angels. “This is our sixth year organizing Holiday Angels. Farmington Youth Assistance (FYA) last week honored 26 middle and high school students from Farmington and Farmington Hills for their charitable contributions. The 27th annual celebration of youth volunteers, held at Glen Oaks Country Club in Farmington Hills, recognized the students for performing at least 100 hours of volunteer work not applied toward high school credit. The Farmington-Farmington Hills Exemplar Club presented checks to 21 local organizations, distributing more than $20,000 Wednesday at John Cowley & Sons in Farmington. The club's director of community relations, Richard Lerner, emceed the noon meeting, with Nancy Cook and club president Steve Joppich presenting the over-sized checks. In keeping with its motto, “Give back. Be Xemplar”, the organization raises funds during the year for local distribution. Their largest annual event is the Jon Grant Signature Classic, a golf tournament held in June. The Annual Duck Race season kicks off with a party at Zap Zone.
More than 60 children enjoyed a few hours of fun at Zap Zone in Farmington Wednesday evening, to help kick off the Farmington-Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth and Families annual Rubber Duck Race. The event happens on July 17, at 3 p.m. in Shiawassee Park in Farmington. But Farmington public and private school students, in grades pre-kindergarten through six, had an opportunity to get in on a little early fun at what Foundation director Barabara Yuhas said is "kind of the kick-off for the Duck Race." Event coordinator Tom Hafey said about 125 students submitted coloring sheets for the chance to participate in Wednesday's event.
