Farmington Library Oscar Event Draws a Big Crowd

The Friends of the Library fundraiser officially kicks off the "I Geek the Library" campaign.

Mike Greer's photography studio in downtown Farmington hummed with conversation Sunday night, as more than 100 guests, all dressed to the nines, waited for a peek at this year's Oscar-nominated short films.  Farmington Community Library children's librarian Maria Showich-Gallup flashed a wide smile when asked about the turnout for the first-ever Red Carpet Event. She said 139 tickets were pre-sold for the fundraiser, which benefits the Farmington Friends of the Library. After enjoying appetizers at the studio, guests moved to the Farmington Civic Theater, where nominees for live action, documentary and animated short films were shown.  The event kicked off "I Geek the Library," a year-long initiative designed to raise awareness about the …

Tickets on Sale Wednesday for Farmington Library Red Carpet Event

Tickets for the Feb. 10 Farmington Community Library I Geek Oscar Shorts Red Carpet Event at the Farmington Civic Theater go on sale today, at the Main Library and Farmington branch. The event officially kicks off "I Geek the Library," a year-long initiative designed to raise awareness about the library and what it brings to the community. The word "geek" is used as a verb, meaning: Community members are encouraged to visit igeekfcl.wordpress.com and submit a statement about what they "geek", and a number of other events are planned during the year.  There are only 275 tickets available for the Red Carpet event, at $15 a person and $25 a couple. Get Your Geek On at the Farmington Community Library

A new initiative aims to raise awareness of what the library offers, even among those who never step foot inside the door.

Farmington Hills city council member Ken Massey geeks the Farmington Community Library.  In a blog post that's part of the library's 2013 "Geek the Library" initiative, Massey writes: "I geek the vast amount of information that resides within our library. When deciding to take on a task, I can count on finding the initial information I need to get me started. It doesn’t stop there; if more detailed information is needed to finish the activity that is also accessible through my library." Geek the Library is a national effort to raise awareness about libraries, the resources they offer and how they are funded.
