Woody, Michigan's Official Groundhog, Issues Apology

On the first day of spring, the weather forecast calls for snow, snow and more snow.

It's the first day of spring, and Woody, Michigan's Official Groundhog, has faced the fact that this year's seasonal prediction was incorrect.  According to the National Weather Service, the forecast for Wednesday night is more snow showers and a low around 19 degrees. Thursday's forecast is a 50 percent of snow showers, cloudy, with a high near 32 degrees. Not your average spring weather.  Like all female woodchuck prognosticators, Woody is not afraid to admit when she's wrong. Video: Michigan's Official Groundhog Predicts Early Spring

More than 50 people attended the Groundhog Day Celebration at the Howell Nature Center.

Woody, Michigan's Official Groundhog, braved the brisk air early this morning at the Howell Nature Center to make her Groundhog Day prediction. Woody, unlike her chief rival Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, admits when she errs – which has only been four times. According to Howell Nature Center Director Dana DeBenham, she has correctly made 9 out of 13 predictions. This year, Woody's prediction of an early spring was met with cheering from the more than 50 people gathered at the nature center. An early spring is predicted when Woody stays outside her den for 30 seconds or more. Woody came to live at the center when she was less than a year old after a local farmer shot her mother, DeBenham said, and has been making Groundhog Day …
