Zombies, Angels Help Farmington Bookstore Celebrate

Off the Beaten Path Books and Cafe marks its first anniversary with a party in downtown Farmington.

Off the Beaten Path Books and Cafe celebrated its first year in business Sunday afternoon by staging a battle between zombies and angels in downtown Farmington. Zombies shambled from the store, which is on Orchard Lake Rd., to meet the angels, led by Diane Rothman from The Sacred Sage, who walked from the Governor Warner Mansion on Grand River. Local residents turned out to watch, with some bringing their children in costume. Bookstore owner Salathiel Palland said she couldn't have been happier with the event. "It was awesome. When we turned the corner and saw all those people waiting, it was really cool," Palland said, adding she appreciated the attendance of Farmington city council member JoAnne McShane. "It felt like Farmington's really…

Five Popular Halloween Costumes for 2011

Traditional Halloween costumes still top consumer research lists as most popular.

A survey by the National Retail Federation earlier this month, outlines the favored Halloween costume trends of 2011. Harry Potter is nowhere to be found.  Read on to find out what the favorite adult and children's costumes are for 2011! 1. Topping the list for adult costumes is the Witch, which implies that more women dress up for Halloween than men. Yet this seems kind of lazy -- the witch is such an easy costume. Pointy hat, long black gown, grab a broom from the kitchen and you’ve got yourself a costume. Numero uno for children is, funny enough, the opposite of the witch -- the Princess. Again, not shocking or too creative. 2. The next spot on the adult list belongs to the Pirate. Walk into any Halloween store and you’ll see a thousand…

Farmington High Students Invite Kids to Give Up Candy for UNICEF

Children willing to trick-or-treat for UNICEF can pick up boxes at the school.

While many children in Farmington and Farmington Hills will be out collecting Halloween treats Monday night, others around the world are suffering for lack of food, clean water and health care. The Farmington High School (FHS) Interact International Club and Model United Nations Club invite children throughout the community to consider giving up a little Halloween candy this year, and trick-or-treat for small donations to UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund).  “I’m sure parents, doctors, and dentists in the area would agree that it makes sense not to buy and hand out Halloween candy—or maybe just scale way back for those who can’t break with tradition," club adviser Roxanne Meacham said. "It would be better for all kids not to give out …

Look for Surprises from Farmington Officers Halloween Night

The Public Safety Department is in its 18th year of handing out treats to children.

On Monday, keep an eye out for members of the Farmington Public Safety (FPS) Department, who will be patrolling Farmington neighborhoods with bags of Halloween surprises for trick-or-treaters. The department started this program 18 years ago, as a good way for children to have a positive first impression of police officers. Halloween bags will be handed out beginning at 6 p.m. on Monday. Look for the Farmington “Crime Prevention” SUV. In addition to this program, FPS will have extra patrols in Farmington neighborhoods during the Halloween season.

Farmington Area Jaycees Host Pumpkin Porch Party

The Governor Warner Mansion benefits from the Sunday event.

The Farmington Area Jaycees, a civic organization for adults ages 21 to 40, hosted a Pumpkin Porch Party Sunday at the Governor Warner Mansion in Farmington. Jaycees president Kristin Garstka said a good turnout and perfect fall weather made the event a big success. Volunteers helped families carve pre-gutted pumpkins; crafts included decorating miniature pumpkins, as well as pillow cases for trick-or-treating. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Mansion, Garstka said. Did you take photos or video at this event? Upload them here, or email them to joni.hubred-golden@patch.com

Farmington Hills PD Staffer Goes Above and Beyond for Halloween

Francine Moore loves the Oct. 31 holiday and dresses to show it.

There are people who love Halloween. And then there's Francine Moore. Plastic spiders crawl across her computer monitor at the Farmington Hills Police Records Dept. Spooky decor adorns the corners of her desk and cubicle walls. Moore also dresses the part of a Halloween fanatic, from her appliqued sweater to a ghost-shaped watch. We caught up with her on her lunch break Friday to ask: What's up with that? "I always loved dressing up (for Halloween) and going to haunted houses," Moore said, adding she also enjoys the thrill and suspense of scary movies. "I've loved it since I can remember." She grew up in Southfield and recalls that after everyone was through trick-or-treating, "there was always one house designated ... where everybody went…
