Safe Shopping Tips for the Holiday Season

Fairlane Town Center General Manager Catherine O'Malley offers her advice for keeping holiday shopping all fun, no fuss.

When you're looking for advice, you go to the experts, right?  Patch picked up some shopping tips from Catherine O'Malley, who runs Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, and formerly managed Twelve Oaks shopping center in Novi. She's an avid shopper, too. And while shopaholics everywhere look forward to the holiday season, O'Malley offered her tips for staying safe and having fun while shopping, whether at a mall, in the mad rush at Best Buy or Target on Black Friday, or picking up gifts from small businesses.  1. Watch, Listen for Farmington Hills Connections in Thanksgiving Parade

Music written by Yessian Music and a Mid American Pompon performance have become staples in the annual event.

Two Farmington Hills businesses will be prominently featured in America’s Thanksgiving Parade, which steps off at 9:05 a.m. Thursday on Woodward and Mack in downtown Detroit.  Yessian Music composed a new parade theme, titled "86 Years" to celebrate the parade's long history. According to Dan Yessian, the music has "a jazzy rhythm that gives a nod to Broadway, but is squarely rooted in Detroit funk." Last year's theme was titled, "Celebrate America ... Celebrate Detroit".  Mid American Pompon All Stars continues its more than a quarter-century tradition of performing in the parade. Costick Center Turkey Shooters Take Home Thanksgiving Birds

Children and adults participated in the Monday free throw shooting contest.

Sharp shooters (from the free-throw line) took home frozen turkeys from Monday's Turkey Shoot, held at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. These Farmington Area Restaurants Open Thanksgiving Day

You can get out of the kitchen and still enjoy a turkey dinner, or something completely different.

Holiday Windows to Light Up Downtown Farmington

A contest sponsored by the Farmington Downtown Development Authority offers businesses a chance to win prizes for beautifully decorated windows.

All downtown Farmington businesses and property owners are invited to show how they can attract, surprise and delight holiday shoppers by creating unique holiday-themed windows. "The downtown shops will really sparkle this holiday. We want you to know Downtown Farmington is the place to be this Christmas!" said Diane Cassidy, owner of Salon Legato, who is assisting with organization of the Farmington Downtown Development Authority (DDA) contest.  What window décor will be judged the “fairest of them all”? Be a Holiday Angel to a Farmington Area Family in Need

Adopt a local family through the Farmington Youth Assistance program.

Farmington Youth Assistance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening area youth and families through community involvement, is looking for volunteers to “adopt” a family in Farmington or Farmington Hills. The Holiday Angels program helps provide underprivileged families with clothing, toys, toiletries, and grocery and utility cards to make their holiday season a little brighter. “With the holidays around the corner, we’re rallying the community to help families who may need a little extra support this season,” said Maria Showich-Gallup, FYA board member and organizer of Holiday Angels. “This is our sixth year organizing Holiday Angels. Farmington-Based Nonprofit Hosts 'Giving Day', ThanksForGiving Dinner, Holiday Party

S.O.U.L. offers opportunities to give and receive during the holiday season.

A Farmington-based nonprofit has announced several events this holiday season that offer opportunities for local residents to give help and get it.  S.O.U.L. Patch's Holiday Event Guide for Metro Detroit 2012

Looking for some holiday cheer within an hour's drive of Farmington and Farmington Hills? We've got lights, Santas, parades and more happing in the greater Detroit area.

We combed our Patch sites for some great holiday events to put together this list of happenings all over southeast Michigan. Get out and have some festive fun!
