Olympic Gold Medal Swimmer to Visit West Bloomfield JCC

With hopes of teaching water safety to young children, Lenny Krayzelburg offers a unique opportunity with swim academy.

Four-time Olympic gold medal swimmer, Lenny Krayzelburg will introduce his new swim academy Jan. 27 at the West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center. According to the Jewish Community Center (JCC), the public can see Krayzelburg free, and his appearance will launch a week of free swimming evaluations for young children. Swimming lessons will then start Feb. 3. "(The academy is) based around teaching water safety and doing it the right way with the right skills. From there, we can start to introduce strokes," said Krayzelburg, who began the academy in 2005. "Every child wants to have peace of mind going into the water that they will be safe and I think we do a good job of making that possible." Krayzelburg, a native of Odessa, said that the …

Party Favors Bring Fun, Creativity to Weddings

The sky's the limit when it comes to wedding favors, and businesses from Bloomfield Township, Clawson and Davisburg will show theirs Sunday at a Joe Cornell Expo in West Bloomfield.

Move over, Jordan almonds. Brides and grooms want to give their guests a memorable gift that will last beyond the day after the big day. Companies offering the latest in wedding mementos will have displays at the Joe Cornell 10th Annual Event Planning Expo, held Sunday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center, 6600 W. Maple in West Bloomfield.  Here are several crowd-pleasers you'll see at the event: Photo booths have become a popular feature at wedding receptions. Farmington Hills Man's Jewish Sports Memorabilia on Display

Jewish sports fans in the United States have passed down the stories and career highlights of Jewish superstar athletes like folklore to children for few generations. One die hard sports fan and memorabilia collector, Robert Matthews, of Farmington Hills, has put his collection regarding Jewish athletes on exhibit at the Jewish Community Center, in order to encourage a sense of history and pride in local children. "Owning the collection is one thing," said Matthews, an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit's school of dentistry, "sharing it and talking to people with a common interest is totally different." Detroit native and Maestro Joseph Silverstein conducted without notes and played the violin with expertise, according to users who went for free after winning a contest. Users said afterward that it was a sight to see. "The concert tonight was awesome! The conductor was marvelous! He used no music to read from, knew all the pieces by heart, played the violin himself flawlessly ... and is 80 years old!" wrote Jay Waldman of Farmington in an email, who entered simply by answering a question on Patch last week.
