Miss Farmington Contra Dance Raises Funds for Homeless Vets

The Sunday event at the American Legion is among the last Elise Newcomer will host before she gives up her crown in July.

During her reign as Miss Farmington, which comes to an end in July, Elise Newcomer has spent a lot of time doing two things: dancing and raising money for charity.  On Sunday afternoon, she'll combine the two, hosting a contra dance at the American Legion in Farmington that will benefit a non-profit that helps homelss veterans in Detroit. Previous dances, which Newcomer describes as similar to a square dance, have raised hundreds of dollars for Sweet Dreamzzz, which educates kids about good sleep habits, and Joy Southfield Development Corporation, which benefits residents in a Detroit neighborhood.  A year ago, Newcomer said, she didn't know where the American Legion Post was, much less what its members do. She hopes bringing the contra …

Southgate Engineer's Chili 'Occupies' Page's Chili Cook Off

Mark Rockwell's winning chicken chili recipe is inspired by breakfast.

Count the winner of Sunday's 17th Annual Chili Cook Off at Page's Food & Spirits in Farmington among the 1 percent.  Southgate resident Mark Rockwell said he named his entry "Occupy Chili", because "one percent of chili chefs make 99 percent of the chili worth eating." His breakfast-inspired chicken chili stood out among 11 entries, winning unanimous approval from contest judges.  Rockwell said he has entered previous competitions and learned about the Page's event in the Detroit Free Press. Having done chili the usual way, he decided to look at cooking chicken chili and what he might do with it. "Chickens lay eggs, and what goes great with eggs? Sausage and bacon," he said, adding he used spices inspired by bloody mary mix. "It turned out…

Miss Farmington Delivers Pizzas to Thank Farmington Public Safety

The department provides services that help the Miss Farmington pageant run smoothly, organizers said.

Among the myriad details involved in the annual Miss Farmington pageant, traffic is one thing organizers don't have to worry about.  To thank Farmington Public Safety officers for their assistance during the July event, Miss Farmington Elise Newcomer made and delivered pizzas to the department Monday. She worked in the kitchen at Bellacino's on Grand River in Farmington, with help from Farmington City Council member JoAnne McShane – and under the watchful eye of restaurant owner Joe Takla, a 1998 Harrison High School graduate.  Pageant organizer Ginny Morris said a converation with Takla during October's Pizza Palooza at the Costick Center led to Monday's delivery. What the officers do for the pageant is greatly appreciated, she said, and…
