Know a Diversity Champion? Submit Rainbow Award Nomination by Feb. 28

The annual awards will be announced during a March 19 breakfast.

If you want to nominate someone for a 2013 Rainbow Recognition award, time is growing short.  Anyone can submit a nomination form, available at fhgov.com, to honor anyone of any age who has actively promoted racial/cultural understanding in Farmington and Farmington Hills. The nomination form should be submitted to the Farmington Hills City Manager’s Office no later than Feb. 28.  Rainbow Recognition recipients will be honored at the annual Rainbow Recognition Breakfast scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the Costick Center. NAACP Detroit Branch executive director Donnell R. White will keynote the event.  The Rainbow Awards breakfast is hosted by the Multicultural Multiracial Community Council of Farmington/Farmington Hills.

NAACP Detroit Branch Executive Director Keynotes Rainbow Awards

NAACP Detroit Branch executive director Donnell R. White will keynote the 17th Annual Rainbow Recognition Awards Breakfast, held March 19, 7:30 a.m., at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills.  Hosted by the Multicultural Multiracial Community Council of Farmington/Farmington Hills, the event recognizes area residents who champion the cause of diversity. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Offers Volunteer, Educational Opportunities

Farmington area residents are invited to a walk and program at the Farmington Community Library Main Library on Monday.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day–observed this year on Jan. 21–isn't just an extra holiday off of work and school. Groups all across the U.S. use the civil rights pioneer's holiday, proposed by Michigan Congressman John Conyers Jr. in 1968 and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, as a day to pay tribute, educate, give back and reflect on the things MLK stood for in his lifetime. Documentary, Discussion at the Farmington Civic Focus on 'The New Metropolis'

The Multicultural Multiracial Community Council hosts a showing of a movie about the effects of migration from urban areas on communities like Farmington and Farmington Hills.

The effects of urban flight on communities like Farmington and Farmington Hills will be the topic of discussion after the showing of the documentary "The New Metropolis" Thursday, 7 p.m., at the Farmington Civic Theater.  Hosted by the Multicultural Multiracial Community Council, the event includes a panel discussion moderated by local radio show host Frankie Darcell. The two-part documentary illustrates how the economic and social health of communities around the country are affected by migration from center city neighborhoods to the suburbs.  Panelists Include: Admission is free, and popcorn and pop are complimentary. The Farmington/Farmington Hills Multicultural Multiracial Community Council (MCMR) will host the Annual Rainbow Recognition Awards Breakfast on Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 a.m. at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. The Rainbow Recognition Awards honor members of the community who have taken an active role in promoting human relations. Nominations for the annual Rainbow Recognition Awards are open through March 5.

The Multicultural/Multiracial Community Council is accepting nominations for the 2012 Rainbow Recognition Awards, which honor community members of all ages who have actively promoted racial/cultural understanding in the community. Recipients will be honored at the annual Rainbow Recognition Breakfast, slated March 20, 2012 at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. Nominations should be submitted to the Farmington Hills city manager’s Office no later than Monday, March 5, 2012. Sights and Sounds: International Coffee House in Farmington Hills

Singers, dancers and a storyteller entertained during the first Heritage Week event Wednesday.

On a cold, rainy Wednesday night, families gathered at Longacre House in Farmington Hills for an International Coffee House. The East Middle School choir, Harrison High dancers and storyteller Rosie Chapman entertained an appreciative, if small, audience. The event was the first held during the 12th annual Heritage Week, organized by the Multicultural Multiracial Community Council (MCMR). At 7 p.m. on Thursday, MCMR will host a free book discussion at the Farmington Community Library Main Library. On Friday at noon, a panel discussion, "Engaging Suburban Students in Dialogues on Diversity" will be held at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge campus. Cost for the lunch is $10. 'Tour the World in Our Hometown' During Heritage Week

The annual observance of diversity in Farmington and Farmington Hills begins today.

This week brings several events designed to bring a greater awareness to diversity in Farmington and Farmington Hills. The theme for the Multicultural Multiracial Community Council's 12th annual Heritage Week, Oct. 16-22, is "Tour the World in our Hometown." These events aim to unite the community by bringing people together to share their backgrounds: On Wednesday, Longacre House will host an International Coffee House from 6 p.m.-9 p.m., with storyteller Rosie Chapman giving an interactive performance that will involve members of the audience and musical instruments.
