Farmington Hills Celebrates Earth Day with Nature Trail Opening

The trail features scent boxes, a sand pit, opossum trail and other opportunities for children and adults to learn more about nature.

Under sunny skies, the City of Farmington Hills celebrated Earth Day Monday with an event in Heritage Park that included the grand opening of a new Nature Discovery Trail.  Naturalist Ashley Simons, representing the city's Nature Center, said many volunteers and groups, including the city's parks staff, made the trail possible.  "If it wasn't for the volunteers, a lot of the programs we offer here at the Nature Center wouldn't be possible," she added.  Mayor Barry Brickner said recycled wood for the arch that marks the beginning of the trail came from various park facilities, including Longacre House, the Farmington Hills Golf Club and the Nature Center roof. Free Earth Day Activities Include Ribbon Cutting for New Nature Trail in Heritage Park

Roast marshmallows, participate in an archeological dig and more during the April 22 event.

Celebrate Earth Day at Heritage Park in Farmington Hills April 22, with free activities that start at 5 p.m. Archeological digs, nature twister, rock painting, face painting, stories by the Longhouse, roasting marshmallows over the campfire, and much more will be offered, and you can witness the ribbon cutting on the new Nature Discovery Trail at 5:45 p.m. Exhibitors that will show you how to save money, save energy and reduce your impact on the environment. Meals fit for everyone in the family will be available for $5 per person from Johnny Pomodoro’s. Registration is not required. To learn more, call 248-477-1135.

Learn About Osprey, Birds of Prey at Farmington Hills Nature Center Workshop

Guest expert Barb Jensen will share her osprey monitoring experiences April 4.

Learn more about one of the most majestic birds, the Osprey, during an April 4 workshop at the Farmington Hills Nature Center.  The 6 p.m. event features guest expert Barb Jensen, who will share her experiences with banding and monitoring ospreys throughout Michigan and offer insider tips on where to find these beautiful birds.  Discover fun facts about osprey and other native birds of prey, plus learn how to help with nest monitoring. Farmington Hills Nature Center Offers Winter Programs

Learn winter survival techniques and how to be a wildlife CSI.

The City of Farmington Hills Nature Discovery Center offers these winter programs open to kids ages 7 and older in February: Winter Survival Practice the art of fire building, shelter building, orienteering, and tracking. Find out what techniques animals use and how they will work for you, too. Held Feb. 21, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and designed for ages 7 and up. Make sure to dress for the weather and exploring outdoors, as the majority of the program will take place outside.  Wildlife CSI Learn how to identify tracks, animal scat, and signs and become a certified Nature Detective. Make your own animal “poo” and animal tracks project to take home. Held Feb. 20 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., this drop-off class is designed for ages 7 to 12. …

Learn How to Use a Telescope at Farmington Hills Astronomy Workshop

The Feb. 7 event in Heritage Park is designed for adults.

Astronomer Steve Hassell will open up the night sky to participants in a Feb. 7 workshop hosted by the City of Farmington Hills Nature Discovery Center.  Get started observing the stars from your own backyard and learn the basics of operating a telescope during this 6 p.m. event. Help a Child with Rett Syndrome by Bowling at Drakeshire This Weekend

Funds raised at a Friday night benefit will go toward a handicapped-accessible van for 9-year-old Rachel Morris' family.

Make a Holiday Craft at the Nature Discovery Center in Farmington Hills

The Dec. 15 workshop is designed for all ages.

Stop by the Nature Discovery Center in Heritage Park Dec. 15 and create a wreath and holiday gifts using materials found in nature. Put together a grapevine and greens holiday wreath or a nature ornament, then decorate a cookie. Kids’ crafts will also be available. The Nature Holiday Craft Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is designed for all ages. Children must be supervised by an adult. Pre-registration is encouraged at https://recreg.fhgov.com or the Costick Center. Participants can also drop in throughout the morning and pay at the door; however, space is limited.
