Farmington Area Goodfellows, Neighborhood House Win Big in Battle of the Middles

The annual charity basketball game tips off Friday in the Farmington High School gymnasium.

The big winners in Friday night's Battle of the Middles charity basketball game, held in the Farmington High School gymnasium, weren't even on the floor.  Families served by the Farmington Area Goodfellows and Neighborhood House charities will benefit from admissions and concession proceeds, as well as canned goods and new, unwrapped toys donated by the hundreds who packed the gym. Staff teams from Power Upper Elementary and East Middle Schools (South) and Dunckel Middle and Warner Upper Elementary Schools (North) played a short game that included plenty of hilarious moves that drew cheers from the crowd. The game began with a moment of silence in memory of the 20 children and 6 adults killed in a Friday morning massacre at Sandy Hook …

Bright House, Busch's Make '12 Days of Giving' Delivery in Farmington Hills

The cable service invited Facebook users to take action that helped stock the Bountiful Backpack program and local food shelves Friday.

Farmington area Facebook users did a lot of "liking" and "sharing" last weekend, and on Friday, it all paid off. The City of Farmington Hills after school program benefitted from Bright House Networks 12 Days of Giving, which offered donations equal to the number of times certain photos were shared on the social media site. On Friday, Bright House and Busch's Fresh Food Market teamed up to deliver more than 3,700 canned and boxed food items that were, in turn, distributed to several local organizations. A Bright House truck brought food first to Farmington Public Schools Visions Unlimited, where students with developmental disabilities pack backpacks for a Farmington-Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth and Families program that provides …

Goofy seating arrangement. They designated one side of the gym for fans of Power and Dunckel, and the other side for Warner and East. So if you're a south sider with a kid at Power and one at East, you either have to split up, or choose which kid can't sit with his/her classmates.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Goodfellows, Neighborhood House Say Thanks for Donations

Calls for donations translate into dramatic increases in giving, Farmington Area Goodfellows president Dave Kenerson says.

The Farmington Area Goodfellows and Neighborhood House make periodic pleas to the Farmington/Farmington Hills community through the year when our food pantry becomes low. Whenever we ask the community to help with food donations, you continue to respond with the great generosity you’ve shown over the years with our Holiday Assistance Program. When our drivers make their normal pick up rounds at both Farmington/Farmington Hills City Halls and the downtown Farmington Public Library, they can immediately tell a request has gone out to the community, because the giving dramatically increases.  Unfortunately, the need for assistance is still high and we are doing our best to help the less fortunate in our community. We need your assistance to …

Letter to the Editor: Neighborhood House Says Thanks

Family support specialist Loretta Zahn says food donations go a long way toward helping needy families in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

To the editor: On behalf of the Farmington/Farmington Hills Neighborhood House, I want to thank you for all the groceries you continue to donate. To say that the current economy is dreadful is an understatement. The numbers of families who rely on local food pantries to get them through the month are increasing in alarming numbers. It was reported in the May 2011 Oakland Press that currently one out of eight Oakland County families are now on food assistance programs and new rules have lowered the amount of assistance received. In the past nine years, the number of Oakland County families receiving food assistance has risen 359%. The need is great, but so is your generosity. The items you donate, such as the Hamburger Helper are very …

Farmington Baker Teaches Bread Making to Help Families in Need

Jeff Pavlik of Sunflour Bakehaus helps Neighborhood House clients stretch their dollars and serve their families healthful, homemade food.

On Monday afternoon, a dozen local families got a lesson in how to stretch their food dollars, with help from a Farmington business owner.  The idea started with Neighborhood House, a non-profit located in the Jon Grant Community Center in Farmington Hills, which helps needy residents get back on their feet after financial hardship and distress. The organization's board of directors wondered: What if clients could learn to bake bread? Board members realized those who were out of work would have time to take a class and learn a healthier, lower-cost way to put bread on their families’ tables. They would get the added benefit of learning a new skill. Board member Alan Maxey brought the idea to baker Jeff Pavlik, owner of Sunflour Bakehaus in…
