House Votes Down Rep. Peters' Amendment to Outsourcing Bill

The Bloomfield Township Democrat denounces the 'lockstep' response to his and several other amendments in a bipartisan-supported bill designed to incentivize American jobs.

Legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township) last month to keep tabs on large American-based multinational corporations was voted down in the House on Thursday morning. Peters denounced the "lockstep" vote after the Outsourcing Accountability Act of 2012 (HR 3875) was voted down, 230-175. It was shot down along with several other pieces of legislation introduced by Democrats as amendments to HR 3606, a bipartisan-supported bill designed to further incentivize the creation of American jobs. "House Republicans voted in lockstep to protect corporate outsourcers by preventing consumers from having the information they need to support companies that create American jobs," Peters said in a statement. "The families I …

Rep. Peters Amendment Against Outsourcing to Face Vote

Outsourcing Accountability Act originally introduced by the Bloomfield Township Democrat is expected to be voted on as amendment to bipartisan-supported legislation.

Legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township) last month to keep tabs on large American-based multinational corporations is expected to be voted on Thursday. Peters and two Democratic co-sponsors introduced the Outsourcing Accountability Act of 2012 (HR 3875), which would require firms with revenues of more than $1 billion to report how many employees they have in the United States broken down by state; jobs abroad would have to be broken down by country. Currently, public filings disclose the current number of employees in a given company.  Peters said Wednesday that the act had been added as an amendment to HR 3606, a bipartisan-supported bill designed to further incentivize the creation of American jobs. That …

Rep. Peters Aims to Expose Outsourcing

Bloomfield Township congressman introduces a bill to make large companies report employees outside the United States. Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden visits Michigan to call for U.S. businesses to come home.

U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township) introduced a bill Tuesday requiring large, American-based, multinational corporations to disclose how many jobs they have outsourced. Currently, public filings disclose the current number of employees in a given company. The Outsourcing Accountability Act of 2012 (HR 3875) would require firms with revenues of more than $1 billion to report how many employees they have in the United States broken down by state; jobs abroad would have to be broken down by country.  On the next day, Vice President Joe Biden was in Grand Rapids calling for changes in how the United States handles companies that send jobs and revenue overseas. That means ending tax breaks for companies that relocate outside the …

RFPs Revealed: Contracts Would Save $5M in First Year

Comments support and oppose proposed privatization of transportation, custodial services.

Ellaine Dawson doesn’t want to drive a garbage truck. She much prefers the job she has now – driving a school bus, picking up children with special needs, which she has done for the last four years. But she’s started applying for work at sanitation companies and other employers who are seeking drivers because she’s afraid that Farmington Public Schools will accept a bid from Durham School Services at its May 10 meeting. That's when officials will consider the Durham proposal, as well as a proposal from SODEXO to provide custodial services for the district. The board of education will also consider proposals from the unions that represent the district’s current bus drivers and custodians. If Durham wins the transportation bid, the company …

As a former Farmington teacher I have worked with many dedicated custodians who are as devoted to the children as the teachers. Schools are families - especially the elementary schools - and we ALL look after our little charges. Children will not get that extra personal attention that workers who are part of that "family" will give them. I think both sides have to think it over and give a little.   more ›

FPS Board Looks at Support Service Proposals

We're live from tonight's Farmington School Board meeting at Hunt Auditorium in North Farmington High.

We're live blogging tonight's Farmington Public Schools Board of Education meeting from North Farmington High School, where officials will get a look at request for proposals (RFPs) to provide the district's support services. We'll  be updated throughout the evening. 10:32 p.m. Public comment is complete. The board's taking a 5-minute break, and somebody put a recording of "We Shall Not Be Moved" on the speakers. Officials won't make a decision tonight, so for us, that's a wrap. Look for Carol Lundberg's continuing coverage Wednesday on Farmington-Farmington Hills Patch. Now it's your turn.
