The Patch Fights Hunger initiative spurred 119 people in 30 Patch cities to donate to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season.
More than 16,500 men, women and children in Metro Detroit will have a warm, healthy meal provided by Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season—and it's all thanks to Patch readers. Throughout the month of November, 30 Michigan Patch communities took part in the Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive, raising funds for Gleaners. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and in the month of giving thanks, Patch partnered with the nonprofit to start the first-ever virtual food drive. Patch readers from across the region "shopped" Gleaners' virtual store and saw exactly what their donation would buy for a person or family in need. How much did each community raise? Donate toys, clothing, food, time or cash to these local organizations.
Because this is a holiday weekend, and the Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market has closed for the regular season, there aren't many activities on our calendar. So we thought we'd provide you with a handy list of charitable drives that you can support this weekend, with donations of clothing, nonperishable foods, books and toys and cash. Browse through the photos above, then click on the links below for more information: Do you know about a charitable cause that's not on our list? Tell us in a comment, and we'll add it to the list.

More than 300,000 children in southeast Michigan don't get enough to eat, negatively impacting health, learning and more.
In our land of plenty, hunger continues to be problem. One in four Michigan children lives in poverty, and that puts them at risk of not getting enough food. Nearly half the people Gleaners Community Food Bank helps—at least 40 percent— are children younger than 18. Sadly, that need is far from being filled. Gleaners actively works to eradicate hunger, targeting a five-county area— Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne—in southeast Michigan. It provides 45 million pounds of food each year to Michigan’s hungry via its 600 partner food pantries, schools, soup kitchens, shelters and nonprofits. “Last year more than 317,000 children in southeast Michigan qualified for free or reduced fee lunches -- about 3,000 more than the year before…

We want to give more to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season. Shop our virtual food drive by Nov. 25 to join the fight.
The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. Ninety-four cents of every dollar you donate goes directly toward feeding hungry people in your own communities. …

You can help stock food shelves by shopping in a virtual "grocery store" and making donations to Gleaners.
Start your week by helping others less fortunate in Farmington and Farmington Hills – and beyond – with a donation to Gleaners Food Bank. Through our 30 Michigan sites, Patch.com is hosting an online food drive to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to feed area families. Gleaners has set up a virtual "grocery store" that collects your donation while letting you know how your dollars go farther to help fight hunger. The statistics are grim, especially for children. One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from. In southeast Michigan, nearly 40 percent of more than 100,000 people receiving food assistance each week are children under age 18. Poor nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, has profound implications on a child’s physical and mental health, development, academic achievement and economic productivity. Today Patch.com, through its 30 Michigan sites, is launching an online food drive to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to feed area families. This is the first virtual food drive for the Gleaners Community Food Bank, and Patch is proud …
