Unless Congress reaches a last-minute agreement on the sequester by Friday, the huge budget cuts slated to kick in have the potential to affect over 1,200 federal employees working in Oakland County. Barring any kind of deal, the Obama administration will have to impose $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts to military and domestic programs on Friday, according to The New York Times. Those cuts would be the start of $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade. The numbers in the graph above show the number of federal employees in Michigan by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. The Farmington area's representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives both released statements Tuesday, following President Barack Obama's State of the Union address. President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." President says proposed right-to-work laws give people "the right to work for less money" during an appearance in Redford Township.
President Barack Obama took direct aim at proposed right-to-work legislation during an appearance Monday in Redford Township. Obama waded into Michigan’s brewing labor battle that erupted last week when Gov. Rick Snyder said right-to-work legislation was on his agenda and union groups protested at the state Capitol in Lansing. Democratic Michigan insiders said President Barack Obama’s auto bailout will help his chances in the state in the November election: that’s the finding of this week’s inaugural Blue Mitten survey of influential Democrats. Twenty-nine Democrats from the southeastern Michigan area were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about how the auto bailout will affect Obama’s standing among Democrats and independents in Michigan. Eighteen responses were collected. All of the respondents said they agree or somewhat agree the bailout will help Obama win over Democrats in Michigan. One of the state's high-ranking Democrats says he won't be voting in today's primary.
Michigan Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th District) won't be voting in today's Democratic primary election. Neither will Farmington Hills Mayor Barry Brickner. The two elected officials say there's no reason for them to go to the polls today, because Democrats will be choosing their candidate – President Barack Obama – in statewide caucuses on May 5. And even those won't offer much action. "There's only one person running, so it's going to be a real quickie," Brickner said. Congressman Bentivolio has a pretty good idea of what it takes to run a small business and create jobs. Our dear President and his Democratic cohorts don't have a clue. This nation has to be able to balance a budget and reduce spending. Increasing taxes will not get the job. We need a strong economy creating jobs and putting people back to work.
