Sequestration Budget Cuts: Where Do Federal Employees Work?

There are more than 90,000 federal employees in Michigan. Click on Oakland County in the interactive chart below to find out how many there are here and hover over the bars to see which departments they work for.

Unless Congress reaches a last-minute agreement on the sequester by Friday, the huge budget cuts slated to kick in have the potential to affect over 1,200 federal employees working in Oakland County. Barring any kind of deal, the Obama administration will have to impose $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts to military and domestic programs on Friday, according to The New York Times. Those cuts would be the start of $1 trillion in cuts over the next decade. The numbers in the graph above show the number of federal employees in Michigan by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. It compiles the data from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management …

Congressmen Respond to President's State of the Union

While Rep. Kerry Bentivolio is critical of Obama's remarks, Rep. Gary Peters applauds his plan for the future.

The Farmington area's representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives both released statements Tuesday, following President Barack Obama's State of the Union address. Congressman Gary Peters, D-14th Congressional, who represents Farmington Hills, praised the president's remarks: “Tonight President Obama laid out a clear and balanced plan to continue growing our economy. By making needed investments in infrastructure, education and 21st century manufacturing, we'll create thousands of good paying middle-class jobs in Michigan and across America. I am hopeful that Republicans and Democrats will put our differences aside and work together to advance these important job creating priorities.” Congressman Kerry Bentivolio, R-11th …

Congressman Bentivolio has a pretty good idea of what it takes to run a small business and create jobs. Our dear President and his Democratic cohorts don't have a clue. This nation has to be able to balance a budget and reduce spending. Increasing taxes will not get the job. We need a strong economy creating jobs and putting people back to work. That is the only way we are going to solve this …   more ›

What Was Your Favorite Moment of the Presidential Inauguration?

There were several highlights during the inauguration ceremony. Tell us what you found to be most memorable.

President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." It also included …

Barack Obama Takes Aim at Right-to-Work Laws

President says proposed right-to-work laws give people "the right to work for less money" during an appearance in Redford Township.

President Barack Obama took direct aim at proposed right-to-work legislation during an appearance Monday in Redford Township. Obama waded into Michigan’s brewing labor battle that erupted last week when Gov. Rick Snyder said right-to-work legislation was on his agenda and union groups protested at the state Capitol in Lansing. "We should do everything we can to keep creating good middle-class jobs that help folks rebuild security for their families," Obama said Monday in a speech at the Daimler Detroit Diesel plant, according to the Huffington Post. Obama added that with right-to-work laws, “what they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money.” Following the press conference, Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th …

Unions were at one time an essential part of workplace safety and fairness. However over time the unions have become a strange entity. Where else can you work as a new hire for the same wage as a 10 year vet and receive the same pay other than a union shop. In my view this undermines productivity by the simple fact that there is no incentive for a worker who outperforms or outproduces another …   more ›

Influential Michigan Democrats Say Obama's Auto Bailout Will Resonate at Polls

In our first Blue Mitten survey, most respondents say they agree that President Barack Obama's support for the 2009 auto bailout will help him in Michigan in the November election.

Democratic Michigan insiders said President Barack Obama’s auto bailout will help his chances in the state in the November election: that’s the finding of this week’s inaugural Blue Mitten survey of influential Democrats. Twenty-nine Democrats from the southeastern Michigan area were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about how the auto bailout will affect Obama’s standing among Democrats and independents in Michigan. Eighteen responses were collected. All of the respondents said they agree or somewhat agree the bailout will help Obama win over Democrats in Michigan. Obama and other Democrats have said the 2009 federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler saved jobs. “His decisiveness on this issue is palpable …

Christopher your accurate and insight full comments will mean nothing to the Conyers/Stabenow/Levin crowd who have generationally voted with their union card and will never be convinced by such pesky inconvenient things like facts. I'm NOT anti-union; I'm anti-STUPID and to think that the UAW and the SEIU has anyones best interest at heart besides their own ( note I did NOT say their members) is …   more ›

POLL: Democrats, Are You Voting in Today's Primary?

One of the state's high-ranking Democrats says he won't be voting in today's primary.

Michigan Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th District) won't be voting in today's Democratic primary election. Neither will Farmington Hills Mayor Barry Brickner. The two elected officials say there's no reason for them to go to the polls today, because Democrats will be choosing their candidate – President Barack Obama – in statewide caucuses on May 5.  And even those won't offer much action.  "There's only one person running, so it's going to be a real quickie," Brickner said. Michigan Democratic Party officials passed a resolution earlier this month that allows Democrats to vote in the primary and at their caucuses. In the resolution, officials accused Secretary of State Ruth Johnson of "partisan mischief," confusing voters over a party rule…

They say that when something is repeated enough that some people start taking it as fact. Looks like you bought that story lock, stock and barrel! So they planted that story in the brains of the Clintons, several other top political leaders from both parties and many other foreign leaders? Come on, you can't be that naive. Looks like Rachel and Ed and co. are living in your mind!   more ›
