Murder-suicide cases took four lives this year.

Here are some of the cases that attracted the most interest from our readers: A 66-year-old woman died of injuries she suffered in an October fire at Jamestown Apartments. Her death was the first fire fatality in Farmington in more than 20 years, Farmington Public Safety Director Bob Schulz said. Farmington Hills Police Cadet Ryan Yudt was promoted to the rank of Police Officer during a promotional ceremony held at the Farmington Hills Police Department on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011. The son of a retired police officer, Yudt began his career with this department in November of 2007. Since that time, he has served the community at the Patrol Division’s Patrol Command Desk, where he maintained the cellblock, completed reports, answered telephones, and provided a variety of walk-in services to citizens who came to the police building. The 24-year-old officer is a graduate of Plymouth Salem High School and has attended Schoolcraft Community College, where he studied Criminal Justice. At a recent ceremony among his peers from throughout Michigan, Farmington Hills Fire Marshal Stephen Hume was selected as the Oakland County Fire Prevention Society Fire Inspector of the Year. Hume hired on with the Farmington Hills Fire Department in 1975 as a paid, on-call firefighter and was the first career firefighter hired by the Department in 1977. He rose through the ranks to Fire Marshal in 1985. Hume oversees all the department's fire prevention efforts, including fire inspections, plan review, fire systems acceptance and compliance testing, hazardous materials, and fire investigations. The owner of a sports collectibles business on Orchard Lake Rd. in Farmington Hills called police Monday around 4 p.m., after a customer attempted to sell stolen sports cards. According to the report, the owner told police he knew the cards were stolen, because their serial numbers matched the numbers from cards stolen in 2007 from his business in Sterling Heights. The customer, a 29-year-old man from Chicago, told police his father gave him the cards, and the father, a West Bloomfield resident, told police he purchased the cards from a pawn shop in Gratiot three years ago. Neither the son nor the father knew the cards were stolen, the report indicated. A resident on Oxford St. told police he parked his car at his residence at 7 p.m. on …

Police say the suspects hit restaurants in Farmington, Farmington Hills and Southfield in a two-hour period Sunday evening.
Farmington Hills Police officers arrested three men who were involved in a multi-jurisdictional robbery spree that took place over just a few hours on Sunday evening. Bryan Michael Heard, James Robert Dall and Alvin Bernard Nelson were taken into custody Sunday night, after a series of robberies at local pizza parlors. The Detroit Free Press reported earlier today that all three men are Farmington Hills residents. They have been arraigned and will be in court for a preliminary exam Tuesday.
