How Can We Make Every Day Earth Day? (Sponsored)

Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.

Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31st, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because of …

Farmington Hills Recycling Rate Hits 40 Percent

Waste Management offers tips for correct use of the larger carts rolled out last summer.

With larger recycling carts rolled out last summer, Farmington Hills residents now divert 40 percent of solid waste from landfills and into the recycling process.  But while residents are making more use of the carts, they could also be using them more efficiently. In a press release issued by the City of Farmington Hills, Waste Management offers the following tips for ensuring that carts are emptied quickly and effectively: DO put only recyclable items in the recycling carts. DO follow the reference list of allowable materials on the cart lid. If you’re unsure if something can be recycled, go to www.rrrasoc.org for further details. DO set your cart “apart.” Place the recycling cart away from mailboxes, parked cars, trees, and other …

Plastic grocery bags are a problem for single stream recycling facilities as they get tangled in the sorting tines and the line has to be shut down to clean them out. That is why they are recycled seperately at the grocery store.   more ›

No Trash Collection Thanksgiving Day, Yard Waste Collection Ends

Trash and recycling collection moves a day because of the national holiday.

Garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection in Farmington and Farmington Hills will not be picked up on Thursday, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Garbage pickup will be delayed one day, with Thursday’s collection made on Friday and Friday’s collection made on Saturday. Monday through Wednesday collections will not be affected, and regular routes resume on Nov. 26. To ensure pickup, please have your garbage at the curbside by 7 a.m. Yard waste pickup will end on regularly scheduled pickup days during the week of November 26-30. Any yard waste accumulated after that week should be stored until spring pickup resumes in early April 2013. Recycling Bin Not Empty on Collection Day? Chalk It Up to a Learning Curve

Farmington and Farmington Hills residents who find recycling items left in their bins can help drivers who are working with new equipment.

Residents in Farmington and Farmington Hills who have found items left in the bottom of their new, larger recycling bins may just need to be a little patient as operators learn how to empty them. But Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County (RRRASOC) director Mike Csapo said residents can also take steps to ensure everything gets dumped into the new trucks.  "It's a learning curve for the truck drivers," Csapo said, noting they may need to learn how to "wiggle" the bins so they empty.  The much larger size of the bins may lead residents to put larger pieces of cardboard in them, and when you fold those pieces a few times, they become springs, Csapo explained.  "Sometimes, they wedge in there," he added. "We ask…

I don't know the answer to that, but I do know that Farmington Public Schools has requested donations of the old bins for use in the schools. They can be dropped off at the FPS operations building on 10 Mile just east of Middlebelt. That's probably the best way to recycle them!   more ›

Alameda Pee Wee Power Savers Earn Emerald Green Schools Status

Students at the Farmington Hills early childhood education center take recycling, reducing and reusing seriously, program coordinator Terry Schneider says.

At Alameda Early Childhood Center, students take their role as "Pee Wee Power Savers" very seriously.  Coordinator Terry Schneider said he knows that, because "parents come back and say we've created a monster." He has been told youngsters will run back into the house if they spot a light that's been left burning when the family leaves. "Anything we say, they take it right to heart," Schneider said.  The school was recognized this year as Michigan Green School at the Emerald level. The state-wide program, established in 2010, offers three levels of achievement – Green, Emerald and Evergreen – based on activities like establishing a student organization, recycling, energy conservation and environmental protection.  Director Nancy Ely said …

Larger Recycling Bins Coming to Farmington Hills

Officials opt for a 64-gallon standard size; residents may also choose smaller or larger wheeled containers.

Citizen concerns over the size of new collection bins that will encourage even more recycling have led Farmington Hills officials to make a slight change in plans for their implementation.  During Monday's regular meeting, city council members approved revisions to a contract with Waste Management, Inc. that reflect a move to single-stream recycling at the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County (RRRASOC). Some residents told officials they oppose the 96-gallon containers, which would likely have to be stored alongside homes and garages.  Authority director Mike Csapo brought samples of the wheeled, 96-gallon, 64-gallon and 35-gallon containers that will be left at city hall so residents can get a look at them…

Farmington Public Schools Sees Sharp Increase in Recycling

The district has collected 62,000 more pounds of recyclables in the first six months of this year than in all of 2009-2010.

The Abitibi Collection Report & Environmental Savings for Farmington Public Schools indicates that the District's recycling efforts have increased dramatically, netting the district nearly $2,000 in the first six months of the 2011-2012 school year.  Abitibi Paper Retrievers are the green and yellow bins seen in school parking lots used by student green teams, as well as the communities of Farmington and Farmington Hills.  School officials announced this week that the district has captured 654,126 pounds of recyclables in the first half of this year, compared with 592,000 in all of 2009-2010. The report bypasses the 2010-2011 school year, due to the closing of four buildings and grade level reconfiguration of schools.  District staffers …

Single Stream Recycling Coming to Farmington, Hills

While some materials will no longer be accepted, wide-mouth plastics will.

Tired of tossing out those margarine tubs and yogurt cups?  The Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County (RRRASOC) will soon bring single-stream recycling to the communities its serves, including Farmington and Farmington Hills, and will begin accepting wide-mouth plastics. Some time in 2012, customers will receive 96-gallon containers for all their recyclables, rather than having to sort them before putting them out on the curb. The change will also mean adding agricultural plastics, like nursery trays, RRRASOC general manager Mike Csapo told Farmington and Farmington Hills officials Monday. Changes made to the authority's Southfield processing facility will triple the company's work force, with jobs from …
