Last Chance: 'Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead' Closes This Weekend

The Oakland Community College theater program brings the classic tragicomedy to the Smith Theater stage in Farmington Hills.

This coming weekend brings your last chance to see Oakland Community College Theatre Program’s production, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are two minor characters in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but Stoppard has turned them into existential antiheroes in his brilliant play. Final performances start at 8 p.m. March 29-31 in the Smith Theater at OCC’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills. General admission is $8; students and seniors (age 60-plus) pay $5. Tickets may be purchased at the OCC Raiders Store or at the Smith Theatre Box Office on the day of the performance. Tickets may also be reserved in advance by calling 248-522-3666.

OCC Theater Faculty Zips Through Hamlet on Farmington Hills Campus

The abbreviated staged reading provides a deeper understanding of the school's production of 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern'.

Normally, it takes more than four hours to get through Shakespeare's classic Hamlet. But a group of Oakland Community College theater faculty members cut the play down to two hours Thursday morning.  A staged reading held in Smith Theater on the Orchard Ridge campus in Farmington Hills presented selected scenes, amplified by the school's resident Shakespeare expert, English Department faculty member John Mitchell. He provided information about Hamlet's origins, which lie in an 11th century Viking saga, along with insights into the play.  "It's a play about plays," Mitchell said, adding a central theme is that "theater itself is about how people exist. See 'Hamlet' Excerpts Thursday at OCC Orchard Ridge in Farmington Hills

The 10 a.m. performance with theater faculty provide a deeper understanding of 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which opens the same day.

As a prelude to performances of the Oakland Community College (OCC) theatre program’s production of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, an edited version of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet will be presented at the Orchard Ridge Campus’ Smith Theatre on Thursday, March 22, 10 a.m.-noon.  OCC English Department faculty member John Mitchell and Theatre Program faculty member Dennis North, who directed Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, will host the event. Admission is free, and the public is invited. Performances of the Oakland Community College Theatre Program’s production, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard, are scheduled March 22-24 and March 29-31 in the Smith Theater at OCC’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills. The curtain rises for all performances at 8 pm.  Featuring a cast of 18, with the lead roles played by women, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is directed by professional actor and OCC Theatre faculty member Dennis North.
