Survey: Expect Higher Back-to-School Prices

Huntington Backpack Index says parents will pay as much as 6 percent more for supplies for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade this year.

  Back-to-school costs for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade are expected to increase by as much as 6 percent this year, according to the 2012 Huntington Backpack Index released Wednesday by Huntington Bank. The annual survey cited small hikes in the cost of common supplies, as well as significant instrument rental fee increases, as factors in the added burden on family budgets. The findings include the following: The index is based on school supply lists collected in the six states where Huntington Bank operates – Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky – and the cost of those supplies at major online retailers such as Staples and OfficeMax.   Huntington Bank offered the following tips to help …

Walgreens Teams Up with Local Org for Back-to-School Donations

Walgreens is accepting school supply donations until Aug. 18 for students of high poverty schools.

Operation: Kid Equip (OKE) is teaming up with Walgreens for the first time to collect school supplies for children in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties. Donations like pencils, notebooks, backpacks and hygiene items can be dropped off at any Walgreens in the tri-county area and other drop-off locations until Aug. 18. The program collects school supplies for children during the back-to-school drive and all year at its distribution center in Troy for those going to high poverty schools. “The school has to have 70 percent or more of the students receiving free or reduced priced lunch,” said Menachem Kniespeck, founder of OKE. “We work throughout Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties with just over 100 schools.” He said they have the potential …
