The city's fifth annual Holiday Shopping Expo is bigger and better than ever, organizers say.
From scarves for your puppy to "re-purposed" vintage jewelry, the City of Farmington Hills 5th Annual Holiday Expo showcases gift items from 80 area crafters and vendors Dec. 7 and 8 at the Costick Center. "We have 80 spots, and there's no more space left for vendors," city recreation superintendent Bryan Farmer said. "We're getting more calls than ever, there's more variety ... Things you wouldn't see in many other places." Local resident Judy Glass will bring her hand-painted sweatshirts, which she and her sister have been creating for more than 20 years. As the holiday shopping season goes into full swing, some people are maxing out their credit cards to pay for presents and others are setting budgets and sticking with them. Scour just about any Facebook stream or stop in a local coffee shop and chances are you’ll hear parents debating the merits of setting spending limits. Or, you'll hear them lamenting about just how much they've already spent. The ideas for a perfect limit do seem to vary rather greatly. Some parents say $100 per child is more than enough. When you're looking for advice, you go to the experts, right? Patch picked up some shopping tips from Catherine O'Malley, who runs Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, and formerly managed Twelve Oaks shopping center in Novi. She's an avid shopper, too. And while shopaholics everywhere look forward to the holiday season, O'Malley offered her tips for staying safe and having fun while shopping, whether at a mall, in the mad rush at Best Buy or Target on Black Friday, or picking up gifts from small businesses. 1. While Walmart and Target have announced they will start their Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving Day, Farmington-Farmington Patch readers say they'll be staying home to enjoy the holiday. According to USA Today, Kmart shoppers since 1991 have been able to pick up Thanksgiving deals from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., then from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday. Last week, employees from Target and Walmart launched petitions at Change.org, demanding that retailers close Thanksgiving Day, CBS Detroit reported Nov. 12.
