Send in the Clowns: New Michigan State Fair Opens Labor Day Weekend

At a Monday press conference in Novi, steering committee member Blair Bowman says Michigan deserves a state fair that's 'called what it is'.

With broad-based support and a new title sponsor, last year's Great Lakes State Fair is being transformed this year in to the Fifth Third Michigan State Fair. At a Monday press conference held at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, a contigent of bagpipers, clowns and cyclists representing Detroit Shriners ushered in a new era for the fair, which launched at the conference and event center in 2012 to fill the void created by the closing of the Michigan State Fair in 2009.  Steering committee member Blair Bowman said everyone asked for help has stepped up to the plate, and organizers are proud that no state funds will be used. A long list of supporting businesses and organizations is topped by new title sponsor Fifth Third Bank.  "We are…

A Michigan State Fair in Novi sounds great. Far easier to get to than the old Silverdome, as it is right off of Interstate 96. Thank you Mr. Bowman for offering this facility!!! I hope the fair planners can recruit some of the "fiber farmers". There are Michigan farmers who raise Alpacas, Llamas, Camels, Sheep & Rams, Angora rabbits & more for the fiber. The fiber is collected (sheared or combed…   more ›

GOP Supreme Court candidates violate Judicial Code of Ethics! Canon 7 says judicial candidates are not supposed to speak in support of a partisan candidate. Of course, given the Republican stranglehold on the judiciary in this state, there probably won't even be a rebuke. Another reason to vote for Johnson, Kelley, and McCormack.   more ›

You asked for suggestions to make the State Fair better next year, so here is my suggestion. DO NOT have a circus that includes animals. The Shrine Circus continues to hire Tarzan Zerbani to bring 'his' animals, even though he is known and has been cited many times, for terrible abuse of elephants, tigers and any others he can use.   more ›

We are fortunate here, to have a zoo that rescues animals from very bad circumstances. Since they cannot care for themselves any longer in the wild, they are given a home at the Detroit Zoo, where there are people that care, and are trained to know how the …   more ›
