Salon Legato and Eye Spy Eye Care are also winners in the Farmington Downtown Development Authority's contest.

The Farmington Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has announced the winners of its "Winter Wonderland Windows" contest for downtown business owners.  The Vines Flower & Garden Shop came out on top, winning an ad with a value of $500, in the Main Street Messenger, a newsletter mailed to 22,000 households in the Farmington/Farmington Hills area. A DDA press release noted the judges felt the window did the best job with a small space, was thoughtful and well-balanced, best at evoking the holiday spirit. “We were very excited to win first place. We decided to do something fun and whimsical this year," said owner Michele Hinds.  Second place Salon Legato wins a one-year membership in the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce with a …

I loved her old shop and she has won me over with her new shop in downtown Farmington! Its kind of cool to watch the artist at work there in the back! And she supports the community every chance she gets- and her fairy gardens are awesome.   more ›

Gardeners Dream Up Ways to Attract Faeries

Want to attract wee sprites to your yard? Here are some tips for creating your own faerie garden.

I wasn’t a true faerie believer until recently strolling the grounds of the John F. Kennedy Arboretum in County Wexford, Ireland. There, I stumbled upon a tiny faerie fort without knowing it. A little moss-covered opening at the base of a towering tree beckoned me to come closer. Up against the intriguing, hollowed area leaned a couple of twigs on an angle. No sooner did I move the little sticks when my faerie-loving sister, Cathy, cried, “Megan! Put those sticks down! Place them as they were! How do you suppose the faeries will get back into their home?” OK. Uhhh … faeries? Then we met Bob, a sharp engineer from New York. He was seriously wandering the magical arboretum grounds in search of faerie forts. The next day, our tour guide, Tom …

Farmington Fairy Door Hunt Starts Tomorrow

The event is among weekend activities that include a dance for adults and a tea party for all ages.

As you're flying around Farmington tomorrow, be on the lookout for fairy doors.  These tiny portals will be carefully concealed inside or outside local businesses, waiting to be found by participants in a free Fairy Door Scavenger Hunt. The event begins at Off the Beaten Path Bookstore & Café, where you can pick up the hunt sheet and your first clue between noon and 11:00 p.m. on Thursday or Friday. Store owner Salathiel Palland said the Fairy Door scavenger hunt is designed to be "multigenerational". Clues are written as poems, and each one leads the team to the next door.  Palland said 18 businesses will have doors, and hunters who also spend $25 or more with the business will be eligible to win additional prizes. She and Diane Rothman, …
