Dr. Paws Pet Therapy brings stress-reducing pets to help medical students relax, Fox 2 News reports.
Wayne State University medical students got a relaxing break from their studies Monday, thanks to a Farmington Hills business. Dr. Paws Pet Therapy paid a visit to the school, according to a WJBK-TV report. Dogs trained by the volunteer organization cuddled with the students, who spend up to 16 hours a day studying. Dr. Paws founder Terry Seraceno told the station, "People are coming up to me saying, 'Oh, thank you for coming. Thank you for doing this.' I mean, it makes you feel really good." Dr. Peter Lichtenberg's latest project is a tool that can help elders avoid being scammed.
Since Sept. 16, 1986, Farmington resident Dr. Peter Lichtenberg has devoted his career to working with his elders. Earlier this month, he received an award that recognizes a life-time of contributions to the field of psychology and aging. Lichtenberg continues to explore new ways to improve the quality of life for seniors; a project he expects to complete next year will help elders avoid losing their life savings to scams. Now head of the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology (IOG), Lichtenberg, 53, traveled to Orlando, FL to accept the prestigious American Psychological Association Committee on Aging Award for the Advancement of Psychology and Aging. If federally subsidized Stafford student loan rates double this year, thousands of dollars in additional interest may hit Walsh College student MiVida Burrus' family doubly hard. During a news conference Tuesday at Wayne State University Oakland Center in Farmington Hills, the Troy mother of three said her daughter has chosen to follow her example of seeking higher education. Both rely on Stafford loans to cover the cost of tuition. "Raising the interest rate hurts me, and it hurts my family," Burrus said. Thomas Lichtenberg's love of music started with his first violin lesson three years ago.
On Dec. 18, 10-year-old violinist Thomas Lichtenberg did something many adult musicians have never done: He performed for the fourth time at Orchestra Hall in Detroit. The Farmington resident is a member of the Wayne State University String Project, a "laboratory school" that pairs Wayne student musicians with children who play violin, viola, cello or bass. The three-year program was named "2011 String Project of the Year" by the American String Teachers Association. For Thomas, playing a stringed instrument continues a family tradition. "I liked that it was the smallest instrument. And my big sister Emily played it before I did," he said. Former Harrison High standout Chris Pyant will play with the Wayne State University Warriors in their first football national championship game this weekend against Pittsburg State. The Division II championship game will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Florence, LA. It will be broadcast live on ESPN2. Wayne State is 12-3 overall this year. According to the WSU Athletics website, Pyant, a red-shirt senior and biological sciences major, attended Western Michigan part-time in the fall of 2010 and transferred to WSU in January of 2011.
