'Fast-Moving Storm' With Freezing Rain, Snow to Hit Farmington Area Friday

The sun is shining brightly over Farmington and Farmington Hills today, but a wintry mix is predicted starting late Thursday night.

In the battle of spring vs. winter this week in Farmington and Farmington Hills, winter is about to take the lead. Forecasters from the National Weather Service are calling for a chance of snow and freezing drizzle overnight. A "Hazardous Weather Statement" issued Thursday calls for a the freezing rain to develop after midnight in areas north of I-94, including all of Oakland County.  There is a 90 percent chance of snow and freezing rain on Friday. "A fast-moving storm system will bring accumulating snowfall late Friday afternoon through Friday night," the statement reads. "Confidence is increasing in appreciable snowfall in the 2 to 4-inch range across much of the area." UPDATED: Winter Storm Closes Farmington Public, Private Schools Wednesday

With as much as 4 inches of snow on the ground, the district calls a snow day.

Farmington Public Schools students who just enjoyed a winter break have another day off Wednesday, thanks to as much as 4 inches of snow dumped on the area since Tuesday afternoon. As of 5 a.m., these schools had also called off classes, according to news reports:  Because Farmington Public Schools closed today, all activities and athletic events are also cancelled, according to the district's snow day policy.  The Farmington/Farmington Hills Breakfast Optimist Club cancelled their Wednesday morning meeting, according to a Facebook post.  A weather emergency declared at 9 p.m. Tuesday in the City of Farmington remains in effect. UPDATED: Winter Storm Closes Farmington Public, Private Schools Friday

Scores of school districts in southeast Michigan closed on Friday, after a heavy overnight snowfall – and more snow is on the way.

Farmington Public Schools students have their second snow day of 2013, as a wintry weather mix dumped about four inches of snow over the metro area overnight.  Our Lady of Sorrows School is also closed. Schoolhouse Montessori Academy announced on Facebook that all of its schools will be closed Friday. All Oakland Community College campuses, include Orchard Ridge in Farmington Hills, are closed today, according to the school's Facebook page. Wayne State University's Oakland Center campus in Farmington Hills is closed today.  Because Farmington Public Schools closed today, all activities and athletic events are also cancelled, according to the district's policy. Cold Weather is Here, Be Prepared for Power Outages

The Farmington Hills/Farmington Emergency Preparedness Commission offers suggestions to help prepare for winter storms.

Now is the time of year for cold temperatures and winter storms. It’s also the time of year when gusting winds and ice and snow can bring power outages. Here are a few tips on how to prepare: Make sure you have a battery-powered or hand crank radio to listen for emergency updates and news reports. The Farmington Hills emergency radio station operates at 1650 AM. If using a portable generator during a power outage, it should always be operated outside, away from doors and windows to avoid dangerous carbon monoxide. Also be sure the generator is operated downwind from any homes. Every home should have a working carbon monoxide detector in each bedroom. Keep flashlights or electric lanterns on hand to provide light; candles may add some …
