Womencenter, AAUW Offer 'Back to School' Event in Farmington Hills

Held at the Orchard Ridge campus, the event helps women decide whether they want to take classes at Oakland Community College.

The Womencenter at Oakland Community College, in cooperation with the American Association of University Women – Farmington Branch, will present “Back to School Day,” May 10 at OCC’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills.  The event, designed for women of all ages interested in attending OCC, will address a variety of issues. Free and open to the public, it runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the campus’ J Building, Room 306. A light lunch will be served. These informational and interactive sessions will assist women in the decision-making process of returning to school at OCC. Topics include: How to get started; the admissions process; financial concerns; stress and time management; balancing work, family and school; and academic and career…

OCC Womencenter Presents Self Defense Workshop Sept. 29

The class teaches approaches to preventing an attack, along with fight techniques.

A “Sexual Assault Prevention and Self Defense for Women” workshop will be offered at Oakland Community College’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills, Saturday, Sept. 29, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Designed to increase knowledge and self-confidence, the workshop provides common sense protection strategies for preventing attack, as well as effective fight and escape techniques for use in case of assault. Self-defense expert Jaye Spiro, who holds a sixth-degree black belt in Karate, conducts the nationally-known, self-defense program. Women ages 13 years and over, of all sizes and fitness abilities, are encouraged to attend. Mothers and daughters are welcome, as are young women preparing for, or attending college or study abroad. Farmington Area Artists Featured in OCC Women's Art Exhibition

The juried “From Our Perspectives" exhibition opens Sept. 27 on the Farmington Hills campus.

Kathleen Boettcher of Farmington Hills and Farmington resident Sandra Shelly have had their artworks selected for the Womencenter of Oakland Community College's 22nd annual "From Our Perspectives" national women's art exhibition.  Boettcher's acrylic painting “Work in Progress/Woman as Artist” and Shelly's 3-dimensional work "Circus Dreams" will be on display during the juried exhibition, which runs Sept. 27-Oct. 26 at OCC Orchard Ridge Campus’ Smith Theatre Gallery in Farmington Hills. An opening reception planned Sept. 27, 7 p.m., unveils 34 of the 300 works of art entered from women artists nationwide. OCC Womencenter Presents 'Call to Wholeness' Conference

The day-long event will be held March 24 on the Orchard Ridge campus in Farmington Hills.

The Womencenter of Oakland Community College’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills will present its 20th annual “A Call to Wholeness” conference for women, Saturday, March 24. The event will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the campus’ J Building. Admission is $40 and the public is invited. Early registration is encouraged.  Brenda Strausz, MA, LLP, will keynote the event, with an interactive presentation, “Live Your Magnificence". In addition, the conference includes two workshop sessions, a continental breakfast, lunch and a prize drawing. OCC Girls Construction Camp Receives Support from Women's Fund

The Rochester nonprofit donates $1,500 to support the annual summer camp held in Farmington Hills.

The Women’s Fund of the Rochester Community Foundation recently donated $1,500 in support of Oakland Community College’s annual Mentor a Girl in Construction (MAGIC) Camp held each July at the Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills. The check was presented by Linda Chayka of the Women’s Fund Education Committee to MAGIC coordinators Arlene Frank of the OCC Womencenter and OCC Construction Management Program Coordinator Melanie Myers at the OCC Foundation’s Doris Mosher Foundation House in Bloomfield Hills on January 19. An OCC graduate, Chayka noted, “Education is one of the Women’s Fund’s top priorities. Farmington Hills Campus Showcases Women's Art

A wine and cheese reception Thursday marks the opening of Oakland Community College Womencenter's annual show.

Julia Kling wandered around the Smith Theatre Gallery at Oakland Community College (OCC) in Farmington Hills Thursday evening, poring over 34 art works in the "From Our Perspectives" national women's art exhibition. "There's a lot of good work," said Kling, an au pair living in Bloomfield and studying at OCC's Highland Lakes campus. "It's really interesting to look at and think about." Juror Shiva Ahmadi selected "Has Ear No Mouth", a haunting depiction of a geisha, by Hui Chi Lee of Lexington, KY, as Best of Show. OCC Womencenter Art Show Opens Sept. 15 in Farmington Hills

The Womencenter at Oakland Community College’s Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills announces its 21st annual national women’s art exhibition. The juried exhibition, “From Our Perspectives,” runs Thursday, Sept. 15 through Friday, Oct. 14 at the Orchard Ridge Campus’ Smith Theatre Gallery. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. This year’s juror, Shiva Ahmadi, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Azad University in Tehran, Iran, in 1998.  Soon after moving to the United States, she earned her Master of Fine Arts degrees from Wayne State University, and from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills.
