Garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection in Farmington and Farmington Hills will not be picked up on Thursday, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Garbage pickup will be delayed one day, with Thursday’s collection made on Friday and Friday’s collection made on Saturday. Monday through Wednesday collections will not be affected, and regular routes resume on Nov. 26. Yard waste collection will resume in the City of Farmington Hills on Monday, April 9. As of that date, all yard waste placed at the curbside in acceptable containers will be collected by the yard waste truck on the regular garbage day. Acceptable yard waste includes leaves, grass, shrub clippings, twigs, and plant materials. There are three options available for yard waste disposal: Place yard waste in a trash can (32-gallon size limit) with a “Yard Waste” sticker available free from City Hall or the DPW. Put yard waste in a brown paper yard waste bag. Use a mulching mower and recycle leaves and grass clippings back into the lawn. Yard waste pickup will end this year in Farmington Hills on regularly scheduled garbage days during the week of Nov. 28 to Dec. 2. Under the city’s refuse contract and Michigan laws governing yard waste disposal, yard waste cannot be picked up after Dec. 2. According to the state Dept. of Environmental Quality, yard waste is prohibited in Michigan landfills. Any accumulated yard waste should be stored until spring pickup resumes in early April, 2012.
