Harrison High Swimmer Marina Borri Shines at National YMCA Championship

Farmington team member places eighth in breaststroke at North Carolina meet.

A varsity star from the Harrison Hawks, 17-year-old senior Marina Borri, scored the only points for the Farmington Family YMCA Stingrays team at a four-day national swimming meet in Greensboro, NC. She finished eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke, earning 15 points to put her YMCA group in 61st place among 100 teams. The YMCA Short-Course National Championship ended Thursday. The Harrison High student is the daughter of Maria and Joseph Borri of Farmington. Her 14-year-old sister Julia swims for the Stingrays' regional zone team.   Among other Metro Detroit teams, a standout was 16-year-old Dakota High swimmer Marah Pugh of Macomb Township. Local Swimmers Compete in YMCA National Championship Events This Week

Dozens of Southeast Michigan's leading young swimmers begin today to compete in Greensboro, NC, in a four-day national championship meet. Teams from Birmingham, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and four other area communities will compete against youths from around the country at the YMCA Short Course National Championship. Individual and relay events run Monday through Thursday. Two dozen members of the Birmingham Blue Dolphins (BBD), representing the Birmingham Family YMCA, are making that team's 42nd appearance at the nationals. Its competitors, aged 12-18, are from 12 public and private schools around the region – including two middle schools. BBD swimmers in 2011 earned three first-place medals and finished ninth overall. Cookie Sales Benefit Farmington, Hills Group Homes

Homemade cookies and candies will be sold on Saturday at the Farmington YMCA to benefit Community Living Centers.

For Ginny Mowbray, the tradition of making candy during the holiday season results in more than just a sweet treat.  She turns out pounds of her sought-after Almond Butter Toffee to help her daughter, Pam, and the roughly 120 other residents at Community Living Centers (CLC).  Mowbray’s candy, along with fudge and hundreds of homemade cookies, will be on sale at the 19th annual CLC Cookie Walk on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Farmington YMCA. All proceeds will benefit residents with developmental disablities living in CLC’s nine group homes and one assisted independent-living home. YMCA Boo Bash Is Frightfully Fun For Families

The Farmington YMCA held its annual Halloween celebration on Saturday.

The Farmington YMCA hosted ghouls and princesses, superheros and villains on Saturday evening at the annual Boo Bash. Katrina Stewart, Youth and Family Director at the Farmington YMCA, said, "We hold this event every year. Every YMCA across the country does it and it's always held on the last Saturday of October. We have lots of fun with it!" The event was free and open to the public and included lots of safe Halloween-themed activities. Children and parents in attendance picked their own pumpkin from the YMCA's "pumpkin patch," got on board a haunted bus for a spooky scare or two, played games to win prizes and created their own crafty treats. Xemplars Hand 21 Checks to Farmington, Hills Organizations

The civic organization distributes more than $20,000 Wednesday.

The Farmington-Farmington Hills Exemplar Club presented checks to 21 local organizations, distributing more than $20,000 Wednesday at John Cowley & Sons in Farmington. The club's director of community relations, Richard Lerner, emceed the noon meeting, with Nancy Cook and club president Steve Joppich presenting the over-sized checks. In keeping with its motto, “Give back. Be Xemplar”, the organization raises funds during the year for local distribution. Their largest annual event is the Jon Grant Signature Classic, a golf tournament held in June.
