L. Brooks Patterson Looks Ahead: 'The County is Changing'

The Oakland County executive proved he's a stand-up guy during an Election Night appearance in Royal Oak.

As Democrats celebrated election victories Tuesday in Michigan and across the country, the mood at the Emagine Royal Oak theater complex, where more than 200 Oakland County Republicans gathered, was a mixed bag. That is, until L. Brooks Patterson, 73, changed the energy of room.  “He gave some remarks and then he told us he had a surprise for us – and then he stood up on his own,” said former Royal Oak Mayor Dennis Cowan. “Everyone burst into applause.”  Patterson, elected to his sixth term as Oakland County Executive on Nov. 6, was injured in a crash in August that left him hospitalized at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac for five weeks after suffering almost a dozen broken bones. He returned to work in October using a wheelchair and …

Farmington, Farmington Hills Voter Turnout Doesn't Reach 2008 Mark

While lines were long at the polls on Tuesday, turnout in both cities was slightly less than in the last presidential election.

Farmington and Farmington Hills residents came out to vote in droves for the 2012 general elections, but in numbers not quite as high as 2008.  Voter turnout in Farmington was a healthy 76.3 percent, a little more than 3 points below the 2008 turnout of nearly 80 percent. In Farmington Hills, turnout this year was 74.21 percent, just slightly under the 74.5 percent recorded in 2008.  Farmington voters chose President Barack Obama over Republican challenger Mitt Romney by a 15-point margin, 57 percent to 42 percent. The margin was even larger in Farmington Hills, where nearly 60 percent voted to re-elect the President.  Both communities were also solidly behind re-elected U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow by 60-63 percent, helping to cement her …

City Clerks Say Despite Long Lines, Election Went Well

Voters in some Farmington and Farmington Hills precincts reported waiting one to two hours to cast their ballots.

Despite thousands of voters creating long lines at polling places across Farmington and Farmington Hills, clerks for both cities say Election Day went virtually without a hitch.  Turnout in Farmington precincts ranged from 74.5 percent in Precinct 4 to 82.85 percent in Precinct 1. In Farmington Hills, turnout was as low as 62 percent in Precinct 17 and as high as 81 percent in Precinct 23.  Anticipating the larger turnout, clerks set up as many voting stations as precinct locations would allow. Farmington clerk Sue Halberstadt and Farmington Hills city clerk Pam Smith said voting machines worked without a hitch all day long. But while Halberstadt said she received no calls about the long lines, voters in Farmington Hills did contact Smith …

State Rep. Vicki Barnett Cruises to Final Term in 37th District, Praises City Clerks

Republican challenger Bruce Lilley praises campaign team and talks about measuring success in a different way.

State Rep. Vicki Barnett cruised into her third and final term in the Michigan House on Tuesday, taking slightly more than 61 percent of the vote in the 37th District, which includes Farmington and Farmington Hills.  Barnett finished with a wider margin of victory over Republican challenger Bruce Lilley of Farmington than when she won her first term in 2008.  "I really want to thank the voters for repudiating the negative attacks and the robocalls that came out for my opponent's side," Barnett said during an election night party at Page's Food & Spirits. "They made it very clear that you win an election in Farmington and Farmington Hills by having ideas and positive things to say."  "We walked all over this district," Barnett campaign …

Term limits make governing worse. You raise money and campaign for at least 3 out of the 6 years in office, just start to really understand the more complex workings and issues of the legislature, and then you are done. Period. Of course, if your objective is to limit the effectiveness of our representatives, you know - the tea party approach to government, term limits represent just the kind of …   more ›

Barack Obama Projected Winner in Michigan

Exit polls show voters backing Barack Obama; national media give the state's 16 electoral votes to the president.

The polls have not been closed long, but based on exit polls results several media organizations have declared President Barack Obama the winner of Michigan's 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican and native son Mitt Romney. NBC, NPR, CNN, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post all have declared Obama the winner. Media outlets also have called the overall race for Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and in recent elections has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Michigan. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.  The economy was a key …

Oakland County Taps Wireless Technology to Expedite Election Results

"We're convinced this will be the fastest Election Night reporting for a presidential election in Oakland County history," Clerk Bill Bullard said Tuesday.

Oakland County on Tuesday was set to become the second county in the United States to tap wireless technology to transmit election results more quickly after the polls close. Even before poll workers finished turning in election materials and absentee voting boards finished processing ballots, results for most precincts in Farmington and Farmington Hills had already been reported.  The analog modems on vote tabulator and absentee ballot counting board machines throughout Oakland County have been upgraded with wireless cellular modems that will allow unofficial results to be transmitted from communities to the county as soon as the polls close at 8 p.m., Oakland County Clerk Bill Bullard said Tuesday. The analog vote tabulator machines were…

Farmington Area Voters Cast Their First Ballots

Caroline Schneemann and Marisa Brauer say they did their homework before voting on Tuesday.

Caroline Schneemann, 18, held a campaign sign for House District 37 candidate Bruce Lilley as she stood shivering with her sister, Genevieve, 16, near Farmington City Hall early Tuesday morning. Caroline planned to cast her very first vote later in the day. The Farmington resident said she felt ready to fill in her ballot, after a long campaign season. She said she watched some of the debates and has listened to what everyone has had to say.  "I tried to pay really close attention," she said.  When it comes to the House race, though, she has more direct knowledge about the candidate she supports.  "Bruce Lilley is our neighbor," Caroline said. "I've grown up knowing him."  "We know he will be an amazing state representative," Genevieve …

When Will Presidential Election 2012 Results Be Announced?

Michigan's voting goes until 8 p.m., but some polls elsewhere close earlier.

Michigan voters have until 8 p.m. Eastern to cast their Election 2012 ballots, but voting in other key swing states ends as much as an hour earlier, and exit polling could provide an early clue whether President Obama or Mitt Romney is closer to the White House. The earliest key state to watch is Virginia, where polls close at 7 p.m. Eastern. Voting ends 30 minutes later in the swing states of Ohio and North Carolina. As Michigan's polls close, the swing states of Florida, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire close their polls, too. Nevada and Iowa, two other swing states that could prove pivotal in this year's presidential election, close voting at 10 p.m. Eastern. Check here as Patch updates Election 2012 results as they come in.
